Hi,

I'm in the market for some flat pedals. Just looking for some help in what to get really!
Had loads recomended to me but unsure whats suitable and mainly which are the better set. I mainly ride at the likes of Llandegla/ Coed Y Brenin (mainly trails centres) On a full suss Trek Fuel EX 8 so are these suitable for these trail centers?

Atomlab Aircorp
Gusset Slim Jim Magnesium
Straitline (possibly bit too pricey)
DMR V12 Magnesium

Or is it best to go clipped as got some Candy Bros when bought the bike?

Thanks Guys
Ride : 09 Trek Fuel EX 8

Try the clips,if you get used to them you'll never go back to flats 8) otherwise the slim jims seem to be the pedal of choice with the flattie boys i ride with.

Ditch DMR V12's from the list, and replace with Wellgo MG1's - about half the price of the DMR's (should find them for £30). And made in the same factory.

Think about buying some fiveten's with the Stealth rubber sole. Combined with a good flat pedal, you get amazing levels of grip.

    My pedal setup:-
    Stumpy - Wellgo MG1 Ti
Custom SX Trail - DMR V12 Mag
Rockhopper - Specialized Lo Pro Mag II
with Fiveten's on my feet, of course!!
Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!
  • make sure you get sealed bearings though cos they're smooth as glass and will last but none sealed get knackered proper quick

Ive got Wellgo MG1s on my Pitch and theyve been pretty nice. Good grip and build quality for around 30 quid

Yes......but...not the same grip as you get if....................you go clipless

  •:lol: Keep going Ibbo - you might convince him eventually. I'm going back to clipless after giving V8's a bash FWIW

You can't appreciate the levels of grip you get from 10 grub screws under each foot (DMR V12) and a sticky fiveten sole until you've tried it. I can plant my foot on the pedal, and pull the pedal up to the top of the stroke. Ok, so I can't put effort in like you would with SPD's. But, amazing all the same.

Since going V12/MG1 + Fiveten I've not had one single slip. Can't say that of my Lo Pro Mag II's + trainers. Only last week I tried to hop a small branch on the cycletrack. Was lucky to keep my shin intact.

    SPDS? Or flatties?
It doesn't really matter. There are pros/cons for both.
Use what works for you. What goes best with your terrain & riding style.

Just don't mix 'n' match. SPD shoes on a flattie are a terrible mix.
Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!

I've recently tried V8s(used to use them a few years back)they're a bit like coffee..........not my cup of Tea :lol::lol::lol:
  • Good point.

Maybe I should qualify - going to keep the flats for bigger rockier stuff like the Peak District - although plenty of people ride there clipped in.

Spd's for more XC related adventures. I miss the pedalling efficiency. Oh, and pedalling hard for long distanceswith flats makes my hips hurt :?

  • What do people think of things like this? : http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=7808

Is it just a normal clipless pedal with a way of using non spd shoes?

    A useful tool...
  • Yeah, if you're just nipping down the shops. wouldn't do any serious riding on those with flats

You still use SPD shoes it just gives you the option of riding unclipped on some of the more techy stuff.

Its the Peak i'm going back to clipless for!(after 3 flatties rides)it felt so wrong not being clipped in.Gone up to Crank Bros mallets from candys though. The Candys are replacing the Look Keos on the road bike. The CB acids are going to be binned, they're shite

Wellgo MG1 are superb - one of the best pedals available at any price, so 25 quid on ebay is steal. They are only 50g more than XTR spds!

What about the Ti Spindle ones - worth the extra?

I'd personally avoid mixing flats and SPDs on the same pedal (especially the ones with an SPD bit on one side only). They aren't great as they are a compromise. I normally ride SPD but have just order some V8s for use in my local quarry ( I've ridden Afan and Cwmcarn in SPDs with no probs but the black at Lee Quarry just defeated me, no problem unclipping, just couldn't get clipped in again to restart :( )
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
  • Another set to look at are the Kona Wah Wah's - pair of them and 5.10's on your feet -they're great. I've just acquired said kit and tried them out for a few weeks.

if you want flats, definatley get mg1, they are the business and feel exactly like v12 (which feel exactly like v12 mags and v8) they are lighter and cheaper too, plus they look coolio.

if you want spd, you are clearly off your tits (only joking!!) no, if you want spds, get proper ones, the ones you have linked are awful. as flat pedals they suck because the clip part is proud of the cge so you dont actually get any grip with flat shoes.

if you try and ride unclipped in spd shoes for "techncal sections" spd shoes wont grip atall and its like standing on the worlds smallest ungrippiest pedals.

if you try them clipped to your shoes, the platform part gets stuck amongst the rest of the tread on your shoe and make itdifficult to twist your foot= you remain trapped and fall off all of the time

of course, all of the above is my on experience, many folk might have been more succesful

I agree whole heartedly with Sheepsteeth with regard to predaling unclipped on SPDs, If I am on the road, and unclip to pull out of a junction and "pull away" quick without clipping in, its almost impossible to get grip - so it can be a bit wibbly wobbly!

I ride XTR spds with Specialised MTB Comp shoes - which as a combo are great for XC - but am gonna be getting a set of MG1s very very soon for most of my other riding

I like Shimanno MX30 (AKA the DX flat pedal), they're pricey at £50 compared to DMR and the Wellshit copies, but they're the Sherman Tank of flats. I've had three sets, 1 on my Enduro for the last two years-ish, a set on my old A-line and a set on my Shocker and they've never once given me a moments bother.

For reference, I weigh 16st and ride ether Afan, Brecfra or Cwmcarn every weekend and I've hit alsorts of rocks and stuff with them and they're still like new.

They grip my 5.10's like no body's business (as long as you fit all the long pins from new).

I have a set of the old DX SPDs - the red ones forget their model number - that I used to use when I rode a bit harder - they were pretty good - still have them in the garage if you are interested - not sure what they are worth though :?

If you are going for flats then good flats shoes are a must.

I went for the shimano dx mp56 shoes for £30 and matched up with v8 (in red) and the grip is fantastic.

Just to let you know i have moved back to flats form using spd for the last year. My reason is that the last 2 bad crashes i have had my cleats have not unclipped and i have been trapped under the bike till my mates stop giggleing and help me up. By bad crashes i mean..... bust bike and off to A+E for xrays. I know that normaly you do unclip in an off and i have had many times that that has happend to me and even 1 off where you did not un clip is rare but i have had 2 in 2 months, I feel thats some one trying to tell me something. after a month of useing flats im as confident on them ad i was on my spd and i have not noticed a drop in grip, I just cant pull up any more.

Just remember we dont all ride the same bike.... eat the same food..... like hte same music why should we all use the same peddal systems.
