Can the shifter ring in a Xenon shifter be changed?

I have a bike using 8 speed, which I like. However, it has first generation Ergos, which I don't particularly like.
I also have some spare 9 speed Xenon shifters, the second generation shame. These, I like. So, is it possible to transplant the shifter ring from the 8 speed Ergos into the Xenons, or should I just make the bike 9 speed?

    Wouldn't it be easiest to use the 9 speed Xenons and just change the spacers on the cassette?

    A lbs should have them lying around in a bin from a worn out 9 speed cassette.

    That way you would keep your present setup.
