Rapha soft shell. They also do a winter jersey with wind proofing but I haven't tried that.

You need to decide which you want because generally you can't have either. Waterproof shell jackets simply aren't breathable enough to let the water vapour out when working hard, meaning the inside gets damp, which then soaks into your mid-layer and therefore you get cold. A decent windproof will keep you warm but permit the water vapour to escape - even if you get wet from rain, you still stay warm - I'd chose warm and wet anyday. The Montane is a shell jacket - it will keep the rain off, but you'll get clammy and cold underneath. Good windproofs are available from the likes of Assos, Gore and many others - expect to pay around £100 plus for a good winter jacket unless you can find something on discount. A shell jacket does have it's use for commuting, short trips or riding at a sedate pace.

totally agree , I have a waterproof jacket and get so hot in it that I literally cannot breathe. i got a giordana windproof jacket last week and it cost me 45 quid, cannot say enough good things about it, kept me as snug as a bug in a rug despite woeful biking conditions.

for 45quid its a no brainer.

I can highly recommend this, especially at the sale price. Also top jacket in Dec' Cycling + 'Must have Winter kit'

  • Windproof and breathable? Not sure what temperature you're wanting this for but Giordana make a good base layer with windshield on the front only:

Effective under a jacket or jersey so fine anywhere between 0 and 10 degrees if it's windy.

I suspect you will 'boil in the bag' in the jacket your mentioned if you are working hard and wearing more than a baselayer underneath (and wicking would be suspect to non-existent). It looks like the kind of thing you could pull on for a chilly descent rather than wear for a whole ride. At around £50 the Pearl Izumi Optik is good for whipping on as needed:

Assos is all you need. Airjack 851 for this time of year and Element One for the Spring/Autumn.
  • Airjack?! You need to get down South! It's been been Intermediate Evo weather the last couple of days! The Element One has always been a bit S&M for my liking but each to their own :-)

Yes James each to their own. The Element One and the Airjack are both excellent jackets. I don't live in Scotland so I don't need a Fugujack.

Recently got a ground effect Draft Dodger, impressed with the quality & fit. All round windproof / breathable fleece with big pit zips for extra ventilation, not waterproof so you'd need an emergency shell in your pocket, other than than very nice bit of kit.
  • Got myself something from Decathlon. Works brilliantly. Windproof and breatheable. It's sells at £45 and is called Rockrider Neuf Winter Jacket. Check it out on their website at http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/cycling-gear-848635/ Their B'Twin stuff is pretty good too.
    Good luck.

Gore Phantom for me. £100 and just fabulous.

For windproof jackets I have a Gore Phantom and Altura NightVision, fit is slightly better on the Phantom but performance is the same (and the Phantom is twice the price). For waterproof I have an Endura Stealth, it's noticeably less breathable than the windproof jackets but also has lots of zips you can open (if the rain stops and you're overheating).

Not in the least bit racy or flash, but the only jackey i've ever come accros to be both waterproof and breathable is this:

I have one in red, they don't do the ventile material in brighter colours.

Been looking at the Altura tops myself, the night vision windproof is about £40 online and a nice fit on me, but has a fleece back and from what i can tell it has no vents in the back, so i may barbeque in it. They also do an Airsteam windproof which isnt quite as nice, and again, doesnt seem to have vents in the back?

But the waterproof night vision does have vents, and looks thinner :?:

851 fine for Scotland. Its the only jacket you need for winter riding(and the intermediate for most summer days)

Can't say I'd ever use zip vents on a decently breathable windproof, just unzipping the main zip a bit is enough for me to control the temperature with. I've never detached the arms on my Gore Phantom either.

Thanks for all the help the better half has bought me a new xmas jacket ALTURA POCKET ROCKET must say first my first impression was good. Was about 5 degrees i just had short sleeved jersey on and the jacket did not overheat and was dry inside when i got home if anything could have put on heavier jersey. Can't comment on how waterproof it is but it very breathable and packs away very small.

I use a Giordana Body Clone thermal jacket and if it's really cold I put on a Gilet. I also carry a water proof racing cape but I don't use it to often as I don't really mind getting wet as long as I'm warm.

How breathable is the thermal jacket?
