In praise of Halfords

Get this.

Yesterday I went into Newmarket Halfords to get 2 new bottle cages for my rebuilt Pearson and spotted 2 Schwalbe Stevio tyres on the sale rack. I asked the guy if they were on sale and when he ran the barcode through, they came up at a pound each!!

An hour later I was home pumping up the second one when suddenly BANG! (I doubt I will see our cat again this side of Christmas). The sidewall had been nicked by something coming off the transport pallette.

This morning I called the Bury store and the extremely helpful and polite chap there not only has sourced 2 from the Kettering store, but his girlfriend (who happens to live in Kettering) is going to bring them over to the local store for me on boxing day!

All the guys in the Cambridge, Bury and Newmarket (who don't know me from Adam) have always gone the extra mile, I personally have always found them most helpful.

But this is quite extraordinary service and I salute them.

  • Good for them, sometimes they can be helpful, but most of the time people in halfords i find to be unhelpful and incompetant (sorry to the few knoledgeble guys working there), i have a good friend working in a certian halfords store, he is 17 has no previous knowledge of bikes, he doesn't even own one! and has had no training on how to service/repair bikes and is assembling/testing and repairing customers bikes!

i have bought a bike from halfords before, a carrera virtuoso which is my commuter and a bloody indestructible if not very heavy one at that! but it sure was good value and the guys were very helpful so i think it depends on who is there when you go, there are lots of mixed reveiws about the place and most people have had problems and good deals there!

myself i think you get what you pay for, you pay less at halfords and generally you get worse service than you would elsewhere
Carbon fibre, it's all nonsense. Drink beer. Ride a steel bike. Don't be a ponce.

Bugger! I was in Newmarket Halfords on Saturday morning looking for stocking fillers (for me, obviously) and didn't see them. And they'd run out of the Joe Blow Sport.
