I notice that M&S are doing long and short-sleeved "sports" base layers. There are some black ones and vest type ones in white. They claim to heat you up or cool you down as required (!) They are cheaper than the others that I can buy here. Has anyone tried them, and are they any good for riding in?
Cheers,
Paxman.

  • Not sure if it's still the case but M&S sports wear used to be made by Viewfrom. If it's not them then it's probably another sportswear manufacturer.

    So probably worth a try

worth a go I'd reckon - how much are they?

if you do get one and it is decent (or useless) - be a good 'un and report back will you?

    Broachboy,
Yes, that's the ones! I took the plunge and bought a couple of the vests - will try one out tomorrow morning and let you know how much faster I am...

    gkerr4 - HK$230 for 2, I think! Follow broachboy's link for UK prices! :)

Ok, gkerr4, just for you, the Like Radar S and M vest review:

    Time - 06.00hrs - 07.20hrs (I've not been well)
Place - Fanling/Sheung Shui New Town, Hong Kong, SAR:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheung_Shui

Route - cycle path, road, mainly flat, some climbing (100m or so). Out as far as the crematorium and back.
Tester - pottssteve (male, 40, slightly tubby, 6 foot 1)

Item - M and S Climate cool vest (white, crew neck, size large). Fifteen quid for 2.

The vest performed very well when teamed with a Flying Ball cycle jersey, Crane jacket ( you know, the cheap ones from Aldi) and Go Lite shorts. It was extremely comfortable to wear and when the wearer began to sweat on the hilly bits it stayed very comfy. It did not feel clammy or cold and the wearer remained warm throughout the journey. Mind you, it was about 15 degrees out there - winter hasn't started in HK yet.
Conclusion - I would thoroughly recommend it, and will be getting a couple more myself before the weather turns colder as they can also be worn under work clothes.

  • Hi PS, I took a look at the vests yesterday while in M&S at Telford. I was impressed with the quality, and based on your mini review will most likely take the plunge, though I think I will shop on-line as the shop couldn't match the web prices, even without the cash back :?

    Hi broachboy,
Ah Telford, jewel of the Midlands....

I have just got back from Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong (I like a bit of Kowloon Tong action), where I purchased 2 more vests which happened to have been reduced from $260 for 2 to $160 for 2. I also got some pants in the same range, so that should excite andrewgturnbull and his S and M buddies.

You may be interested know that the vest I wore this morning has been washed and it maintained it's shape nicely (when washed at 30 degrees using Persil Non-Bio and Comfort fabric softener with like colours. Cadance was 1200 rpm).

Right, I'm off to bake some cakes now, and then I might give birth...

By the way, I agree that "Warsteiner - "Eine Königin unter den Bieren"". Although Erdinger and Krombacher are ok too.
