Tiagra 4500 STI lever cleaning

I need to clean these levers - I've fallen off into the mud and the levers are full of mud/sand/crap etc - even behind the clear plastic bit on the top. Can I remove the little clear plastic bit (there's a couple of small screws) and blast/squirt with WD40 or similar? Any ideas welcome, cheers.
