Im looking for a new bike xmas present around 350 - 400, i have looked at the bikes and gear but got confused

Boy age 12 needs a 14in bike

anyone any recomendations

Many manufacturers do smaller versions of the main sizes - have a look at the What hardtail 2009 thread for some ideas.

Usually I would recommend trying the bike, as one 14 is not the same as another - but I understand for Christmas this may not be possible. But I'd still measure his inside leg and make sure the models you are looking at have standover clearance.
