Its my other passion...i've had 4 cars since i've been at uni ad have been secretly saving for a nice one when i finish uni a get a job.(these quotes have been done with 0 NCB btw, as i have 2 years as a named driver and i've changed cars too many times to be able to build up my own :( )

I've been doing some insurance research and....

Renaultsport 172 = £952pa
Renaultsport 172 cup = £945pa
Renaultsport 182 = £988pa
Pug GTI = £890pa
Pug GTI 180 = £1680pa
Pug 306 GTI-6 = £866pa
Paxo vts = £1111pa

I'm well tempted by a 172 cup!!
The GTI180 has me shocked tho, how expensive!

Saxo and Pug cheaper to buy easier to tune = more boy racers crashing them.

Probably also easier to steal and lift off snap over steer is alarming!!

I'm a little surprised the cups cheaper though.

I'd be tempted to buy something very cheap, and just leave it parked for as long as possible to build some NCB.

Oh and out of that list don't get a Gti-6, the others are much more fun for the money.

Are those quite TPFT or Fully Comp ?

Bigben - how old are you?!

My new Golf R32 was £680 when I was 29!
    My mk2 Gti was £550 when I was 23!

I'd go for a 182 out of that list - 172 is a bit old and torque steers like a bu66er.

182's got my vote, newer, better and faster and not really a huge difference in price.
My brother in law had a 106GTI  now that was fast and it stuck to the road like sh*t, awesome car
  • i'm 22, and they're all fully comp.
The GTI-6 was in there for comparison (i do realy like 306's tho)...i was looking at the gti180 or a 172 cup..

I've had 4 cars since being at uni (Escort GTI, Pug 206 2.0 Hdi, Pug 306 1.9DT, Pug 406 2.1DT) and wish i'd kept one to keep my NCB :(

And i thought £235 fully comp was extortion
  • I have a 172 :D and would recommend one happily. There is feck all difference between the cup, 172 and 182 in terms of performance on the road, and nothing that some Eibach or coilovers wouldn't sort out for the track.

Some people say the cup is the quickest but your talking very little difference and it seems to be more down to how well the engine is worn in and looked after. You actually need one that has been driven hard though for it to be a quick one otherwise they are just to tight.

The cup also has poverty spec seats/trim, no climate/air con and most importantly for the road NO ABS! They are a nice colour though! The Phase 2, 172 and the 182 are the same inside although only the later 172's have ESP. If you do go for the 182 get one with both cup packs.

One of the things that amazes me about them is the economy. Without a word of a lie on the motor way it is easy to see 40-45mpg doing 75-85. On the town run I get around 31-34mpg (my dads 406 HDI doing similar gets 33-36, admitedly its a lot bigger though).

You can also get 2 people with 2 bikes in the boot and a weeks worth of clobber without any problems with the seats down.

Now for the bad points. They do rattle a bit, Standard exhausts WILL fall off within 3 years max (just need to get a good stainless job as your replacement). You also need to choose carefully with them. Seems if you get one made on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon then you might have no end of problems.

Surf Matt the 172 does not torque steer any worse than the cup or the 182 unless there is something wrong with it
I have to say on a good A/B road not many other hot hatches come close in terms of fun factor and performance.

As for your other choices the only one I would have is the GTI-6. Grat fun to drive but they feel very old inside now and they have a very bad drinking habit! The 106/saxo's are just to chavy now and not the safest of cars (although both great to drive). Oh and the 1*2's are the quickest on the list

Here's mine and if you would like anymore info on them let me know :D

  • nice...thats the colour i want too :P

I ideally i'd want the cup...i want to make it into a "super cup" as some point...

I HATE (I really mean this) all the electronic gadgetry on cars. It takes all the feeling away and makes people think they are better drivers than they really are (Massa in the wet with no traction control for example). growing up with mk1 escorts and fiestas hasn't helped much :P
I'd much rather a completely raw car, which is why the 172 cup is so appealing to me.
  • Can't beat Iceburg silver

Tbh the ESP very rarely kicks in unless you drive like a prat when the weather doesn't permit. Like this time of year! They also have a very handy button that turns it off

Please explain what you mean by "super cup"? and I will reply when I get back from the pub.
I hope you not referring to a body kit, chav stylee :?
  • no bodykits here mate...disgusting! (unless its a wide arch kit for the mk1 mexico :P)

edit: the "super cup" is basically just modifying to get the complete performance from the car...its not really an actual guideline, but is basically what an owner wants..

an example would be something like this.. (description taken from a user on cliosport forums)

    Minimum Power/Weight ratio of 200bhp/tonne.
Capable on road and track without being too compromised for either.
As much suspension adjustability as reasonably possible.
Maintain use of as many standard components as possible to minimise running and repair costs.
Maintain drive by wire throttle actuation and standard electronics package for reliability.
Reduce weight where ever possible without heavily compromising the car for road use
Be capable of repeated 58.5 second laps around Brands Hatch Indy.

I doubt i'd go that far (at least for a while anyways) but when you have access to an engine winch, and all the snap on tools you could possibly imagine....its hard not to 8)
  • I'm a VTS owner, decided to look past the boy racer image and give one a whirl. Great handling car, very chuckable around the twisty Cumbrian roads.

Not too bad on juice either, I get high 30 to low 40 mpg thats a mix of usual driving and a bit sprited too. Think I managed about 47mpg out of a tank once too, and no I wasn't driving like a complete Granma!

Admittedly I wouldn't like to crash in one though!

Only thing is its pretty small- I could maybe do with something a bit bigger to throw the bike in.

I've use to have a Prelude, 2.2 Si Vtec (197bhp) and the Saxo is so much more fun to drive IMO. I quiet like the Clios too- just the 172 interior looks a bit dated for my liking.

Parts are peanuts for Citroens/Pugs too.

Good to know  I'm on there more than here tbh

And as you probably know strippage gives the best/cheapest gains on a 1*2.
You can do a decat but I'm not prepared to risk insurance with that.
Other than that and a remap you need to spend a lot on a 1*2 to get much more power.

Suspension is one of the best ways to get the best out of them. But I'm yet to change that my self. It seems great to me as it is :D . I have a full stainless cat back and a ITG filter. Other than that it's standard.

As it is it really is a stunning car to drive. so much fun and when I get bored/can afford might look at the suspension.
  • When I say parts are cheap for cit/pug I mean compared to Hondas!

I've helped handling on mine with a set of Koni adjustables and some Faulkner Springs.

I got a Magnex exhaust too, its probably the quietest aftermarket one you can get but I'm considering putting a stndard one back on TBH. I'm getting too old

  • Snotty, as I said the Saxo vts/Pug gti are great to drive. Its getting harder and harder to get good examples now though. It's a shame really because they do have a lot going for them.
Just to much of a tin can for my liking/age.

    Yea thats prob the guy...

I'll probably just have a tinker for the 1st year...possibly strip the rear (not much room with me in the front anyways) full stainless and a nice set of coilovers :)

just out of interest... what does the 1*2 mean? i've seen it loads over on cliosport but i havent the foggyest what it means!

oh and with regards to parts...i have a "contact" that works at a euro car autofactors...i get trade discount, a discount from the autofactors because of my "contact" and then a little more dropped of the price due to a friendly discount

You do know that modifying a car will increase your insurance costs a hell of a lot?

    yes...........................

    i'm not that dull.
If i was being picky id tell you that my insurance premium didnt change when i uprated the suspension on my 306. It was passed as an increase in safety....go figure.
  • The 1*2 refers to the fact that the 172 and 182 are basically the same and the * is the wild card.

Ahhhh it makes sense :) cheers mate.

Just to much of a tin can for my liking/age.

It took a bit of searching for a VTS that wasn't "modded to the max" then one turned up locally.

I feel I'm a bit old for one at 28, think people are shocked when they see a Saxo being driven almost sensibly

They are very biscuit tin-esqe though- my first car was an AX GT, so its like remanising! Although at least now I've got ABS and airbags!

106 GTis hold they're value a bit better but I wasn't prepared to pay £xxx more for the same car.

Benj- CTR EK9s are dropping in price abit not fancy a bit of Jap?

  • i'm not a fan of japmobiles.. i think their looks age really badly. would much rather a euro car :)
  • furry muff pal.

I see where you're coming from. Great little engine in the EK9s though, 1.6N/A with 185bhp.

Only real problem with Hondas they seem to rot fairly easily compared to French cars- but the engines will last for ages!

  • yea, no denying that the engines are superb...i think i'm correct in saying that honda are the only manufacturer to not have recalled one of their engines, which is quite a feat!
hard to find a nice civic these days tho...lots have been mullered :(
  • Thats the only thing with hot hatches as they become affordable- they fall into the wrong hands!

    I wouldn't mind going old skool and getting a Mk1 XR2 8)

My dads getting a MK1 or MK2 escort 3door in the next couple of weeks, awesome little cars but jesus when he told me the prices they were selling for
should have a look at a Series 1 Rs Turbo? Most of the series 1's havnt been messed with or hammered. would also make a nice little investment as i can see them heading the same way the early escorts!
Suppose you do get alot more benefits with a new car..
  • Ford = rust. I want a decent runaround car.

Plans to RWD a mk1 fiesta in the future :)
