Many (or most) bikes now have compact or semi-compact frames with sloping top tubes. As such the actual measurement of the top tube does not reflect the distance between the seat tube and head tube in a horizontal line. This is probably the most important part of frame-fit because it gives the reach. Manufacturers therefore usually quote actual top tube length, and equivalent or "virtual" top tube length, which is the measurement horizontally from where the top tube leaves the head tube to where this line would intersect the seat tube. For gauging your frame size, use this virtual or equivalent measurement.
