I bought a Kore DH stem and Ritchey headset, both an inch and an eight because im getting some Rock Shox Tora u-turn forks for christmas. The frame im putting them on currently has some frankly crap forks on and a quillion headset and stem. I haven't done much if any tinkering/changing on the front end of bikes. I thought I would try to get my new headset and stem on before christmas, then just get the new forks put on. Because its a quillion setup does that mean that the forks are definately threaded and therefore I wont be able to put the new headset on until I get the Rock Shox because its a threadless headset? Im abit nervous about taking it all apart and screwing it all up because I would like to ride a couple more times before x-mas. Any help appreciated, cheers.

not sure about the quilled headset, but you are sure not gonna get the new stem on before fitting the fork.....it clamps onto the steerer....

do you have a headset removal tool? they are a nuisance to remove.

Wait til you get the forks, then get a shop to fit them if you are still unsure....shouldn't cost much.

Yeah, I thought i might clamp it on to the old forks if i could then put it on the new ones when i got them.

Yeah I think just waiting and getting it done all together is a good idea. They'll do it for free in the Hargroves near me
    cheers cee.

Any other ideas or points on the quillion headset and whether the old forks will be threaded welcome though.

If you have a quill stem then the forks steerer and old headset will both be threaded and incompatible with the new forks. Leave it until your new forks turn up and then get your LBSs to do it. It's not a big job but ideally needs correct tools to get the old headset cups out and push the new ones in. may also need the headtubefacing?
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

Will the frame accept a 1 + 1/8th headset and fork? Highly likely yours is for 1 inch.

Cheers stumpy, Im not sure what headfacing is? lol but im sure the staff will know. I took it in and had it measured and it was 1 1/8th headset and fork, they said it would fit so hopefully thats correct-pretty sure it is. Im going to be buying a new frame in the not too distant future hopefully, erm its a bit of a mystery really because my cousin built the bike for me out of bits he had because he had like 5, the wasteful git. He THINKS the frame is a Rocky Mountain frame (probs 2 years old or maybe a lil bit more?) but does fine for me at the moment and the shocks are manitou but im not sure on the model. He had it all properly resprayed because it was a horrible green so the model codes etc. are covered over.

If you remove the stem it will have the size stamped into it (or it should have), if in doubt post a few pictures. 1" = 25.5mm, 1 1/8" = 28.6mm
  • A two year old mountain bike with a quill stem is going to be a very low spec bike i think. I'd be more inclined to think that the frame is closer to ten years old, maybe a lot more.
Can you let us have a pic please?
