Chip in my Scott Scale 30 Carbon frame..

Hey,

I have a 1cm*0.5cm chip on my carbon frame (on the triangle bit that attaches to the seat post bit at the top :) ). Looks like it goes down to the carbon underneath as it is matte and feels rough.

I know cracks are bad news in carbon frames but what about chips? A stray rock probably caused it so I wonder if Scott will replace (< 6 months old).

While I'm on the subject does anyone else find their lacquer slowly becomes surfaced-scratched over time? More specifically where you can see the nude carbon wraps. Perhaps I'm not washing it properly..

Thanks!
Joe.

Pics? Could be just through the lacquer and nothing to worry about. Also, the top layer is the pretty one and doesn't do much for the strength. Paint, lacquer or any other finish on a bike becomes scratched over time...

  • You could try patching it up with some clear nail varnish. Maybe after you've had the LBS give it the once-over for your peace of mind.

  • If it is structural, then it is repairable with epoxy resin adn some carbon/kevlar cloth, but the repair will be very ugly and require you to use toxic epoxy resin.
  • As bad as the chip may look I doubt it will have affected the frame structurally. The top coat is prone to popping off. The layer of carbon you see under the top coat is purely superficial, the structural layers are underneath. Either way though get it check out.

As for cleaning - The top coat is soft, it has to be to deal with the flex in the frame. All I do is just be extra sure it is clean before I wipe it dry, I also find using a microfibre cloth helps. A spot of car polish will soon get your frame looking fresh. I must admit though, at this time of year I use the gf's hairdryer to dry it (being careful not to get the frame too hot!!)
