SRAM x5 front mech problems

ive recently brought a new bike and it wasn't set up properly and with little knowledge i found 2 screws on the front mech and tryed loosening and tightening them to get it to push the cable to the 3rd ring. i spent a hour or so today in the woods and when i was riding it back i noticed a rubbing noise and i looked and saw my chains now constantly rubbing on the mech and the mechs rubbing on the wheel!! how do i adjust the mech?!? i could get halfords to do it but ide rather do it my self...very persific instructions for a newbie would be appreciated. many thank.

actualy i should be ok ive downloaded a pdf document from the SRAM website so ill give it a go tomorrow ill report back with results0
