WHAT full suspension 2009?

  • I don't read the magazines that often, so only have seen the latest review..

I haven't yet seen another Pitch, but the area I live in is very Asian. Asians don't ride bicycles! Though when they get older they do like big rims and black windows on their Golfs.
  • i completely agree about the fsr, gotta be worth a grand.

What's people's opinion on the spec differences between the models? I see one shop offering 15% off 09 Specialized in January, making the Comp, Expert and Pro, £831, £997 and £1,163 respectively. Seems like awesome value.

Looking at the specs, quite a bit is specialized branded so hard to compare- although finishing kit isn't all the important in my view. Can upgrade later if desired, or a lot of people already have a favoured saddle / bar and stem etc.

Only the Pro comes with a 2pc crank v's octalink. Not a massive deal. The Octalink will survive the winter better anyway!
Slightly different mech combo's, but all with deore shifters.
Not sure about the wheels as the comp has Specialized branded rims v's DT on the other 2. I'm guessing this has minimal (if any) performance difference.
Brakes are all specialized versions of Juicy 3's (there or there a bouts).

What's the opinion on the forks / shocks? Most of the price difference is in this area.
I'm sure they're all ok, but any stand out 'worth it' jumps in performance with the increase in price? I'm not good with the different model's and what that means in real world tune-ability.
I'm assuming that this Recon model has more over the Tora than a few g as there's nothing else stand out between the comp and expert (unless you like red bikes).

    Comp: Tora 302 SL / X Fusion 02RLA
    Expert: Recon 335SL / X Fusion 02RC
Pro: Reba SL / Fox Triad

The cheapest model also has the best colour :D

I think the Pro is worth the extra for the better shock and fork - fork has Motion Control, the others don't, which is a more refined ride. Couple of other minor differences too.

    TBH are all great value!

Giant? Trance, Trance X, Reign.... All very good bikes that pedal remarkably well, and with the Reign go down very quick as well!

Hi guys - advice gratefully received pls.....

Survived my 1st race season in mtbing - XTERRA s x 2 , falls 2 !! Need to upgrade from my heavy HT.

Lucky to have the pennies - called a pension ..& looking at

Specialised Stump jumpers ..FSR Comp / Elite vs Giant Anthem 1 .

Having one foot in the grave , weight is a KEY factor for me as I have to get this sodding bike up all these hills ! Annoyingly most specs exclude weight which to me is v important .

Also just picked up on the Boardman bike .Looks good kit for the money , but suspect a lot of bike snobs look down their noses at bikes that Halford's sell......More fool them eh !

Boardman FS-09 Comp get an excellent review:

You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

DAZ - thx a lot ..must check that bike out . :D The finer points of the review are lost on me but it sounds like a nice light bike . Off to ARGOS to get me a set of anglers weigh scales so can check weigh these bikes ..seeing as the specs rarely include weights.

Had a look at 09 Cube FS's today. The AMS pro seem like a lot of bike for the money @ £1600

A True All Mountain bike like these top three IE Orange 5 AM Yeti 575 Trek EX9

To me is a 5 inch or 5 inch plus frame and a Fox 160 talas up front (Personal choice)
I know its not perfectly balanced than the 160 front and back
but nearly perfectly balanced at the 130 setting
You can use all of the adjustability of the front fork for all
situations wherever you care to ride.
  • Went for the FSR XC Comp through my C2W. Should be here within a fortnight. :D

Just got a good offer for a Cube AMS Pro 100 K18 (2009 model) at 1650 Euro's. Seems to me a very good deal. Boardman is only sold in UK and that's a shame. Seems good value, although is doesn't match the Cube for looks.

Cubes are good value in my mind. As they do not have a UK base, and the bikes are imported to order, there is no VAT. I guess there must be some import duty though??

    I got a carerra banshee x 08 from bikehut for £450.

it was an ex display model and the last one in the shop but if you look around you can probably get a good deal.

theyre made in the same factory as Kona by the way, using the same tubing and the same engineers/welders. just a thought.

Hi raw68...seemingly Boardman have similar bits to Specialzed and to steer clear of copyright issues they only are sold in UK ..Suppose way round that wud b 4 u to get a mate to buy one & then do a personal export ...if dealer did that could put kibosh on the dealership aggreement .

There's a big bike shop in New York but they won't sell to uk ..it was a good idea to ship from USA when we got $2 to £1 , but currently ..forget it !!!

The new Boardman FS bikes use a 'Horst link' on the rear suss so they cannot just be sold in the US without coming to a deal with Specialized as they own the US patents for the Horst design - as seen on their FSR bikes.

the answer is next month some time but many stores wont be receiving them untill they have shifted the old ones

took delivery of my Spesh FSRxc comp '09 on thursday and couldnt be happier with it. excellent kit for the price, including rear SLX components and the front rockshox tora really are very good for the price. It's also light for the £££ and wouldnt hesitate for a minute in recommending it.

Brilliant neutral handling, light enough to really mash it uphill and locking out the shock really does give it an almost hardtail-like eagerness up all but the most daunting inclines.

    Gotta be 9/10 so far...
  • I reckon the bikes to look out for this year are the lapierre ones...

stunning visually and ride pretty well too.

I'd agree with that. One thing worth checking with the X-Fuson shock - make sure it has the right pressure in it for your weight. Mine arrived with only 80psi - it was astonishingly soft and I used 40% of the travel just sitting on it. A quick trip to LBS to buy a shock pump soon sorted that and it is now a much nicer 150psi. I'll still have to tweak it over the next few rides but it feels better already.

Got 4 stars on here at £1500 - Pike and a Float for £880 - has to be good
  • 'Afternoon,
    Having missed the boat on a pitch pro, I've been looking at either;
    - Specialized FSR XC Pro. '08 (good prices, pro-pedal, shock looks bit vulnerable)
    - Specialized FSR XC Pro. '09 (more pricey, pro-pedal, shock sheltered by seat tube)
    - Rocky Mountain Element 30 '08 (mid price, cannot find spec. confirming pro-pedal, shock in sheltered position)
100, 120, 100mm travel respectively, which is fine for what I'll need - 1/2 XC and 1/2 trail centre red + black routes. Too old now for heavy landings, and need the pro-pedal as climbing's my main advantage - have a Revolution Triad 2 HT and want to improve my descent joy a bit. Can anyone offer some comments on the models above?
    Thanks in advance, Rob

Well I'm delighted with my FSRxc Comp and it has met all my expectations so I'd have to say you'd do well with the FSRxc Pro.

My bike got absolutely caked in mud at the weekend and yet the rear shock got barely a splatter.

yes that will be my next purchase, i got Certini in Plymouth to set it to my weight (85kgs) before it was sent to me, and it seems to ride fine. Fairly little sag, and teh front forks seem good for the money, but might be worth an uprage in a year or so.

Other than that though cant be happier

I'd still advise getting a shock pump and setting it to what you want.
