Anyone been watching Survivors on BBC-HD?
Personally, really enjoying it so far. Makes a change to see the end of the world with NO electricity/gas/water/TV, etc...
BUT, it made me think... What shop would I raid 1st (you know we all would) if I awoke to find myself 1 of only a few?
Sainsbury's? Nah! Tesco? Nah! Pub? Hmmm, maybe. Halfords? LBS? Hell yeah! All the energy gels you can eat and test ride every bike you want.
Where would you raid first?

Gun shop followed by the Humvee shop, petrol station and Tescos. Back to the cave and take it from there0

Did laugh when the they headed straight for Netto. I think I may at least go to Waitrose first.Northwind wrote: It's like I covered it in superglue and rode it through ebay.0

Too many things to think of if this is a practical question rather than a 'what would I do if I were king for a day' question.
Food, water, shelter, medicine, transport, clothing are generally the basics, with education required as part of the civilisation thing and to pass on knowledge and learning.
The short term considerations would with minimal competition be easy to deal with, but after a while, a couple of years as the dried goods run out, your into a situation where you'd need to grow/catch your own food, make your own clothes, provide your own transport when the petrol runs out, maintain your own housing when the roof starts to leak and every other house has trees growing in the front room.
Outside of a modern society that deal with most such things, you'd be better off thinking 18th Century rural society and the level of technology that cottage industry can support, in the long run best place to raid after immediate and pressing needs were met would be a library, then a seed store, get hold of historic agricultural equipment and find some horses to work it, take hold of a farm that can support agriculture with minimal work and the ability to expand with population, and learn fast.'Twas Mulga Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze....0 -
I'd go to the industrial site where I work and raid where I work (tesco dot.com store), then raid the jag store round the corner (not that I like jags, but hey its a car) then halfords, then the bed place to get some extra comfort at home, then I'd go to the post office and get some stamps0

LBS, mine is just round the corner from where Suvivors was filmedIt's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.
I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result0 -

Your mum must be a really really bad cook then.
Biscuits Fruit and the chocolate (most of the time) was good though. Corned beef hash isn't too bad, most of the stuff is awful. Biscuits brown just get binned.0 -
Local 'XXX' shop??0

Mine would be:
-Military barracks for weapons, artillery, ammunition, army lorries and of course TANKS and ration packs/food
-Police station for more weapons, faster cars aswell
-Tesco and load a couple of those big trucks up with food and supplies etc
-B&Q for things to do repairs with and maintence with
And finally the showpiece of my plan, a castle with a moat and a drawbridge, i would put all the artillery pieces in there and i could defend my self easy mwhahahahahaha
Anyone want to be on my side if this happens? lol
I have this all planned out0 -
I would pop around Mr Heffner’s place to see if I could help to start re-populating the world0

I like jpstar's idea, but I think we'll need a trip to the zoo first, and a couple of months to train the monkeys to drive all the trucks and tans for us.Northwind wrote: It's like I covered it in superglue and rode it through ebay.0

seeing as eveyone is raving about it i'm going to start watching it on iplayer right now"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

My first job would be to get hold of an A-Team van. All problems solved. An A-Team van can do anything2014 Whyte T-129S0
