Bike Insurance

Even though my garage door looks like fort knocks and I have my bikes locked up with a few chains that were sold secure gold rated for a high performance motorbike i used to have, plus a ground anchor, I am still a little paronoid about losing my bikes.

At the moment I do not have insurance for them except for the standard house hold limit of £500 which will cover a couple of bikes as they are 3+ years old but I have another 2 which are worth a bit more. I have been quoted £200 to cover the bikes which is more than my motorbike cost!!! As I will be changing my house insurance next month is it worth finding a company who will cover the higher value bikes as well or is this a bit iffy and should I wait until I can afford to insure them therough a specialist?
Thanks

  • I was in a similar position but went for Marks and Spencer home insurance. They cover your bikes at home and away from home worldwide and as long as each bike is less than £4000 they don't need to be specified on the policy. M&S worked out a little more expensive than other quotes but after I'd taken into account some seperate specialist bike insurance it worked out considerably cheaper. I can't comment on what they're like if you need to claim but service so far has been good.

Mine are also covered on the home insurance albeit to £2500.. But that will cover the cost of each individual bike, so not sure what happens if some toerag nicks 'em all?
Also covered away from home on the policy as well. Mine with Natwest..

  • I used A-Plan Insurance (a broker) and they sorted me out with insurance to cover my bike both at home, in the shed and away from home as well as my music equipment at a pretty reasonable price, with Zurich. Guess 'reasonable price depends on thecost of your gear and your postcode though.
    Welcome, to my bonesaw!
  • I got mine through E & L, as bike insurance is one of things they specialise in. And if i ever need to claim i would rather be dealing with an insurer who is used to dealing with high value bike claims! Rather than the normal household insurer who will try and get away with paying as little as poss!

Cheers, having a look at some of the household policy's it looks like they may not cover 3rd party liability which i need to factor. May do a bit more shoping around.

    E&L are crap.

I had one bike stolen from inside my house (claimed on house insurance)

E&L refused to insure the replacement bike & will not re-insure my other bike at renewal time

  • Did they give any reasons as to why they would not insure you?

    Too risky

House is alarmed & locked with approved locks.

House insurer doesn't have any issues with insuring the bikes.

  • You would had thought that they would just quote a sky high premium instead of turning you away!
