26 x 44/50.....huh?

Wifes front tyre is 26 x 44/50. Ca what do these numbers relate to? Rear is same bran
d but 26 x 1.9

Can I use a normal 26 x 1.9 or 26 x 2.0 on her front? Assuming clearance of course

The 44/50 is probably the size in millimetres, although I've no idea why there are 2 sizes given. No problem at all with fitting any 26 inch tyre on the front. You could fit a 1.9" on the front to match the rear, but the trend now seems to be towards slightly fatter tyres for actual off road stuff.
