I finally found out yesterday how secure my job is due to the credit crisis and it looks like i have missed being made redundant by the skin of my teeth :? For the time being anyway.

Therefore this has made me think choice about my bike choice that i am hoping to buy in feburary/march. Obviously i want the highest spec bike for the least amount of money. Focus seems to fit the bill.

I have therefore decided on 3 options and i just wondered what your thoughts/opinions are.

My aims for 2009 is to increase from 50 miles up-to 100 miles as well as take part in the L2B in July. I may also start to take part in Sunday club runs.

My top budget is now going to be £1500 and for that i want the best wheels that i can get. They must be strong to cope with London & Home Counties roads but be light enough to assist in hill climbing.

1st Choice Full Carbon 105 Groupset http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Focus_Cayo_105_2009/5360037591/
Focus Cayo 105 £989.10 - plus upgraded wheels Dura Ace 7850 or Fulcrum Racing 3 or Easton EA90's

2nd Choice Full Carbon Ultegra Groupset http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Focus_Cayo_Ultegra_2009/5360037590/
Focus Cayo Ultegra £1349.10 and use the supplied Mavic Wheels

3rd Choice Aluminium Frame Carbon Forks Ultegra Groupset http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Focus_Culebro_2009/5360037595/
Focus Culebro £899.10 - plus upgraded wheels Dura Ace 7850 or Fulcrum Racing 3 or Easton EA90s

I will also have to spend appx £100 on other accessories so need to bear this in mind as well.

  • Planet X are doing a bargain deal at the mo,you've gotta build it up yourself but its a big saving and you get a top spec bike. Be quick tho as the offer ends soon.

  • Why dont you grab a bargain off Ebay, i buy all my racing bikes off there and they are always mint, and you get so much more for your money, As for wheels if your a campag man, get yourself a pair of shamal ultra wheels, very very strong, light roll fast, and cant be flexed and dead easy to get tyres on and off. Ive used all mavic wheels i.e the sl's and es wheels plus fulcrums, and these beat them all hands down, i wouldnt buy anything else!! For £1500 you could get a full carbon frame with top of the range groupset ie chorus or dura ace. Just make sure you ask for loads of pics or go to view it, i find that most cyclists are geniune and wont flog you a piece of crap. Why pay full whack when you could get it half price, and in as new condition!
Up hup hup hup.....fricking hate that!

Have heard/read that current Campag freehubs are quite noisy. Khamsin model seems to stand out in that regard. How is the noise off the Shamal?
