Which computer?

Hi All,

A bit of an open question but I am thinking of getting a new computer/hrm and looking for any thoughts. I am considering anything from something basic to the Garmin Edge 705.

I also like the iBike which has a power estimate but can't find a UK seller. I would really appreciate any comments - what's your favourite? I appreciate this has been asked before but am trying to get an upto date view to get something for xmas.

Thanks -Tom

i have a 705, did have a wireless cateye that came on my TT bike, and do have a garmin 305... not used anything else

I love my garmins, dont regret upgrading to a 705 when i smashed up my 305 (didnt realise garmin did an out of waranty replcacement at the time)

If you like your stats and being able to download the gps/ride data after i would recommend a garmin, 705 or 305 presuming you want cadence and HR, 605 or 205 if you dont (they dont work with any accessories)

If you want resonable routing then you need a 605 or 705, but the maps cost extra (or buy it as a bundle), would suggest get the maps on a dvd though, rather than a bundled SD card, as that way you can install them on a PC and do some routing on there before hand.. rather than clumsily on the device

  • Tom, got a polar CS200, nice bit of kit, gives you everything you need inc cadence, and sits on your stem, and all the info can be downloaded.

  • Will, I am really tempted by the 705 but also like the CS200 as suggested by Jez- This is going to be a really hard choice.

I like stats but then never know if they are really helping - have done the last few thousand miles with just a basic HRM and no computer - I used the Suunto T3 which has a cycling computer on it - but it does not work well as a cycling computer (the readoiut is small and it switches off at rests) and now the HRM straps broke. I've spent so much on gear this year I'm trying to keep the price down. I used to have a ciclosport Hac 4 (it was damaged when I was knocked off) - downloading stats was OK but I just couldn't keep it together and would forget to start it recording etc. I really would like something easy.

    mmmmmmm

    Responses really appreciated - Tom
  • Tom, just found that keeping a downloaded record helps if you are training for something, if only to remind you what you are or aren't doing.
I just like something that tells me what my heart rate is, and how far I've been etc etc, and at the mo I use the cadence to make myself spin....
The CS200 sits on your stem and is out of the way.
Not cheap though, think I paid £80ish.

  • Jez,

What can you download to the PC - how does it do that?

    Tom
  • Tom, you can download on the info onto your pc.
Have a look on Polars website, give you a bit more insight into what is what..
