I'm just wondering what the difference is on a rear derailleur Shimano GS Short Cage and a Standard Cage (SS?) is? I know the GS Long Cage would be from triples but whats the GS Short Cage for?

Mucho Thanko....

Not sure where you're looking at that's describing GS as "short cage". In fact GS is long cage and SS is short cage - there is no such thing as "GS short cage". The confusion often comes I think because the two sizes for MTB mechs are SGS (super long cage) and GS, and people sometimes then describe GS as "short cage", however for road mechs, GS is as long as you get.

I checked CRC who used to use that description, and even they have largely corrected themselves - still one or two instances of them getting it wrong though.
  • Yeah it was on CRC and wondered, A 9spd Shimano 105 GS Short Cage. Is this not the same as a standard SS? There's no tweener or supershort cage is there? Thought GS might just mean "non-standard" where GS Long = longer cage drop or GS Short = shorter cage drop i.e. longer or shorter than normal.

I was going to guess you'd seen it on CRC until I checked and couldn't find an example of them doing it with a road mech. Once ordered a "GS Short Cage" from them without checking properly and got a long cage!

The "GS" and "SS" bit specify the cage length, nothing else. It's just CRC getting it wrong.
