Cracked alu frame - getting it repaired

I've got a 7005 alu frame (Veto Aero) with a cracked chainstay/rear drop out. All fine for 7 years, 75miles+ commuting a week, then crack. Frame out of warranty, crap.

Question: good or bad idea to get it repaired?

I've found a local engineering firm with TIG-welding facilities who can do it for me - anyone out there ever done this?

Comments

  • IIRC re-welding an alu frame buggers up the heat treatment and results in bad things happening.

You'll need to re-weld it, strip all the paint and re-heat treat the frame.

New frame is better plan, buy a steel one for ease of re-welding
  • Thanks, somehow I knew it wouldn't be that simple

Out of interest, what does IIRC stand for?
  • ignore that last one (durh!)
  • IIRC = If I remember correctly

Welding a frame back together results in tempering part of the frame meaning that bit will be harder (or softer, can't remember) but anyway it makes a massive weak point. So yeah new frame time :)
