been out on my road bike last week and my feet were like ice when I got back, then went out yesterday on the mud hopper, got caked and even 2 hours after finishing my feet were like ice, I wear over shoes but it doesnt seem make any difference, only happens when i cycle and not when I go skiing or walking for example.

anyone got any tips on keeping my tips warm ?

I wear Northwave boots - always have warm, dry toes.

Not cheap, but better long term than overshoes which never really kept my feet properly warm.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

A combination of wool socks, winter cycling shoes and neoprene overshoes keeps my feet warm for about an hour on the bike this time of year. Beyond that I resort to chemical foot warmers as well - "Toastie Toes" are my favourites as they are thin enough not to be uncomfortable and have adhesive so they don't move around.
  • One extra tip, if you shoes have big ventilation holes cover them over with a bit of tape or cardboard, Overshoes don't always cover this hole.
  • Two thin pairs of socks are better than 1 pair of thick socks.
Try 'Millets' for under-socks - used by ramblers and worn (by them) under thicker socks to stop boots chaffing. Make sure your shoes are big enought to allow this without cramping your feet.

I've been putting a wedge of paper (maybe 10 - 15 pages thick) between cycling shoe and overshoe and this has helped - on same basis as newspaper down the jersey on alpine descents. Keeps the cold aie further from the feet.

You should, if money permits, buy winter shoes or boots a size too large, and wear socks such as WoolieBoolies, thus creating 'warm air space'. Normal size shoes that are worn with thicker socks make things a little tight, and your feet will stay cold.

I have been getting back & unable to walk for up to an hour due to frozen feet. Then arghhhh... the pain as blood starts pumping through my toes again.

Bought a pair of Northwave neoprene over-shoe things. Went off this morning and got back after 2 hours & not even a twinge in my little tootsie.

Found them in LBS scratch bin for £20. Highly recommended!!!! Cannot believe the difference.

Make sure your shoes are not too tight, especially if wearing thicker socks. I wear Sealskinz socks under normal touring shoes and cover with neoprene overshoes. The latter help to keep the wind out of the vents but are not waterproof. The Sealskinz socks are both wind and waterproof so my toes remain warm even if the shoes get soaked.

Just bought some merino wool socks. They're brilliant, but I also wear neoprene overshoes to give more protection from the elements.

do your hands do the same?

could be that your legs aren't warm enough and that vasoconstriction is doing for your feet...

I'd vote for neoprene overshoes and more that one pair of socks

  • cheers for advice guys, I will try some stuff out this weekend - I forgot to mention it was 2 different shows, my road shoes (which d have the vent gap in which will be taped up from now on) and my MTB shoes which were worns with Seal Skinz - but I do find seal skinz not very comfortable or warn, a bit like wearing thick plastic bags - the weather on monday though meant I had no choice but to choose waterproof socks !

its only my feet in reply - never my hands, legs or any other toastie part of my body !
