Anyone else finding it hard to drag their ass out on the bike when it is dark and pissing with rain, and you got nobody to ride with? Every night this week i got home with every intention to go out for a ride but it never seems to happen  It's not that i don't want to get out on the bike no more, it's just this bloody weather......maybe i'v got that seasonal effective disorder or something............

We're not helping by riding so little at the moment. Its a lot easier to get out there when you're meeting up with people, otherwise i doubt i'd get out at all for night rides!

No dogs, no horses, no walkers - best time to go IMO.

We have moved our weekend rides so that they end up in the dark! Nothing like bashing trails in the pitch with only a light to guide the way....

Brilliant....only the bit of trail you can see is important. Everything else just doesn't enter the mind (apart frmo all those eyes staring out from the bushes  )

I am ashamed to say that my bike has not left the shed in a month,I took a bit of a heavy tumble at the Cwmcarn XC course which left me bruised and sore for a few weeks and since then I just havent found the motivation :(

U guys need to realise how lucky u are and get out as much as u can whilst u can, my bike was nicked a few weeks ago and theres no way for the forseeable future i can see of getting one and i miss it massively.

You dont realise what you've got until its gone so get outhere and make the most of it guys.

    Agreed!!

I've not been able to ride for 7 months now due to injury. I'd give anything to get out and ride, even if it is p*ss*ing it down

I know exactly what you mean - this time of year I'm restricted to weekends - I mean, it's not that I don't want to it's just all the attendant bollocks that goes with it - washing bikes, washing gear, drying it all...Then there's all the f@<*&^g stupid motorists on the road bits - I mean, they can't see you during the day, what chance have you got at night?

Plus you get home from work knackered to start with (well, all except the unemployable and spongers, sorry students...), the last thing I want is to go riding. Hot bath, tea, MTB DVDs or footy on the telly, bed.

And I cannot for the life of me see the attraction of riding off-road at night. "Ooh, but Dave it opens a whole new world of riding!!" LIKE BOLLOCKS IT DOES!!! It's just like riding the same trails - except in the dark! Brilliant. Which idiot thought that one up??

And why are lights so blimming expensive? I refuse to pay upwards of £200 on a set of sodding lights. I can get a set of night-vision goggles for that!!

  • I'm still riding, off-road a couple of times a week, on the road about 5-6miles a day, just enough to keep the cobwebs out.

well 2 weeksago i snapped my frame bust my lip and gavemy self a black eye at stainburn it took me a a week and a 1/2 to get all the parts to build up the new frame and i finished it tuesday night... 6am wednesday morneing i was out for a wet and muddey blast throug the rain starting in the dark and riding through the sunrise.

Riding in the cold and wet is all about haveing the right kit. and then its the same as riding in the uk weather ( hang on that is cold and wet :? ) in summer.

you go out for a ride and you will need to wash your bike and clean the chain and relube. you will also need to have a shower. If its wet out the mud that you are cleaning off is just easyer to get off.

If you dont like it you dont like it so sit indoors and watch biking DVD and post on forums.
or get your self some rollers and a cheap road bike to keep the legs moving so you have some fitness for the spring...

I agree and last winter the trails IMO were drier in January than in summer. Let's hope this current batch of rainy weather moves on.

LOL i don't hate it that much  Do you feel better after that little rant  If i am riding with others and am feeling fit don't mind it, but it's just when you arrive home knackered already, then you'v got to faff around getting something to eat, by the time i'v got all the winter gear on it's gone 6 and i'm thinking i just want to crash out and watch telle! Also i get bored riding on my own now.

Bad luck Jason, hope you get another bike soon. I had my old piece of sh@t bike knicked and i didn't ride again for another 4 years! Wasn't into off roading then though.

Nick- Stop being a workaholic and come ride with me, i'll be back to 16 stone again by the time you have a whole in your busy schedule

Anyway, time to stop winging and get out on the bike......maybe :)

  • I find it hard to drag my ass out on the weekends when I look out of the window and its blowing a gale, cold and pissing down. I need to make more effort but it really does get bleak living on the top of the pennines

I would give night riding a go but cant justify spending so much on lights that I may or may not end up using/liking much.

It also doesnt help that my left knee gives me trouble when it gets to cold either  .
  • Hate to say it but I ride come wind, rain, hail, snow ice or shine, night or day. With the right gear I don't see the difference.

However, I don't see it as a bad thing if you cannot raise the motivation after work, to me if you're forcing yourself out you shouldn't be out. Everybody is different. I for instance would find it hard to get out more than twice in the week and twice at the weekend, that I could not justify.

I have to admit it is difficult when it's dark. I've tried riding at night off-road and I just don't see the attraction.

And the thoughts of riding on the road at night, well forget it, it just scares me stiff.

The amount of washing of clothes and bikes that I've done this year has been scandalous and I don't relish the thought of doing extra during the week either.

So unfortunately I'm pegged back to riding at weekend now whether I like it or not. I'm just hpoing and praying that it's reasonably fine over Christmas and that 2009 isn't as big a wash-out as this year was :( .

I've been out with my Tesco super lights now a couple of times, enjoyed the getting out but I have to agree in part with Dave's comments, if I had the choice I'd rather ride the trails during the day (which twit said you go faster at night, I certainly don't). That said I'd rather be out at night than sat on the exercise bike  .
if you're forcing yourself out you shouldn't be out
could I rephrase that? 'if you're forcing yourself out and hate every minute of it when you are out you shouldn't be out.'

It's an old cliche but it is true that the hardest part of any ride is actually leaving the house, sometimes you have to give yourself the kick up the bum to get out.

Have to say the washing clothes / bike thing is the same as it was in August, I'm actually looking forward to colder days when the ground might actually freeze, a couple of days last winter were more like summer riding, hard trails (frozen) and sunshine (although admittedly air temps of 2 degs rather than 22 degs  ).

The whole bike cleaning thing is really putting me off, besides i can't get it clean enough under lights! :?

At this rate i'm seriously contemplating a cheapy road bike to keep me fit...............

  • Think i sounded like a right drama queen in my original post, as once i am out and now i have got some of my fitness back after a 3 week break, i realy enjoyed my ride tonight :D It was muddy as hell and i was sliding all over the place, but i actually managed a 20+ mile ride tonight and i am now mad keen to do more tomorrow. And you don't have to spend stupid money on lights, just get a couple of Fenix L2D's at £40 each which are more than bright enough to see where your going. The novelty of night riding wore off for me midway through last winter though. Oh and apart from the gears, i haven't cleaned my bike in 3 weeks, and yes i can feel the extra weight
  • I'm struggling right now with going out. The comments are all very true. If I get my gear together and get in the car and drive to the trail centre, I'd have a right blast, but it just seems so far away from where I am now, in the warm with my dressing gown on chilling out.

I'm edging closer to going out though, especially reading about those who don't have their bikes or have no way of going out - I bet if I were sat here injured or just having had the bike nicked I'd be steaming and would be desperate to go.

Going to watch some youtube stuff of Llandegla to try get me inspired!

Exactly - night riding is no way near as fun/fast as daytime, but it is still a chance to turn the cranks.
