Changing cassette or crankset options?
I have a Specialized Elite with standard 53/39 chainrings and 11/28 cassette.
If I want to change the cassette to a 11/23 or 12/25 for closer spaces between gears I assume I do not need to swap anything else as this falls between what I already have?
Secondly, if I want to go compact instead can I just change to a 50/34 or will I need a new longer rear mech or shorter chain?
Thanks.

A new cassette is likely to mean a new chain anyway as uneven wear will result in chainjumping with even moderate forse unless the existing cassette/chain combo has done very few miles. You have a 28??? - dont go for a 23 as a max if you currently need that 28 , leave it a 12-25 with your new compact IF you feel you still need the smaller gears??0

if your just changing the rear cassette just switch it, you would have a little extra chain slack but nothing to change...
As for going to a compact (presume from a standard double), you would probably want to shorten the chain a little, as you might end up with to much slack for the rear mech when your on the smallest front and rear. As for needing a new rear mech, was using a short cage rear mech with a compact and a 11-28 cassette. You can buy compact specific front mechs, and having used one they do make a difference, but just adjust your current front mech down a bit and it will change fine. Not sure if you would need to change the BB, i didn't lol

I assume you are on Shimano. If so any rear mech will work with the compact. You do not need a special front mech as they do not make one. As said if your chain has done a fair mileage you should change it. It will not slip if a bit worn but will wear your new cassette quicker. As regards chain length put the gears into big ring/small cog. the jockey wheels should be vertical or there abouts. This will be one or two full links less than you have at the moment. Ere on the long side rather than short. As long as the chain clears the underside of the top jockey when you are on small/small it is OK.
Personaly I prefer 12/27 to 12/25 as the gaps on the bigger cogs are too small to be worth while. I use 12/23 for racing. With 10sp both cassettes are straight through from 12 to 17 which I find ideal. I really want a 12/27 11sp to get the 18 but that is being greedy. I don't think Campag do it either, but I would not go there would I.0
