Loose Cones....

Having visited Afan the other week, Ive finally found time to revist my bike to inspect for any issues I picked up over the weekend of fun!
Ive found that both front and rear wheels now have excess lateral play, pointing me to loose cones.
Am I right in thinking that the weekends battering the bike has taken simply loosened them?, or is this a sign that Ive knackered the hubs somehow?
Should I be concerned? - I really dont have the money for new hubs pre-xmas!!
Tightening shouldnt be a problem for me, lots of howto's on old t'internet, just want you lot to voice an opinion....

Sounds like they are working loose, they can't be wearing out that fast.
The method is to tighten up the cones until they have a little play but once they are quick released tightened they should have no play.
Clean them out and stuff them full of grease and they should last for ages.0 -
also worth a drop of thread lock on the axle, if no thread lock then a drop of superglue!!Timmo.

If the wheel clunks then the hub needs tightening. If it merely flexes then it is okay.
There is definite "clunkage" from both wheels, will have a go at tightening this afternoon and see how I fare.
Anyone know of a good howto on er how to strip a hub and service? Ive got standard hubs which came with the bike, I was assuming they where some kind of sealed unit, therefore unservicable?"I don't do double-entendres, but I do like to slip a big one in occasionally"

Managed to tighten both wheels up - and felt a great sense of achievement! I also went a step further and opened up the front hub to inspect the bearings - all look fine to me.
Rear hub just under the cassette near the cones had crud and muck in. So cleaned that up a bit.
Which brings me to my next question:
Which grease do you recommend when overhauling?
Im going to set aside some time to properly strip out the bearings, clean, degrease and re-grease.
Any advice welcome, if it helps, some of the original grease in the hubs was/is a bright lime green colour."I don't do double-entendres, but I do like to slip a big one in occasionally"

I bought a big pot of Finish Line Teflon Grease for about a fiver from any online bicycle outlet you choose.
It lasts forever.Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

Yup parktools is the place to go;
http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=105
At stage 5 on the Hub overhaul I would instead recommend that you get a spanner and put one on each locknut and undo it that way - if you do it the way shown in parktools you will ruin your special flat spanner by warping it.
At stage 2 on the Hub overhaul, count the threads on opposite sides or measure them and divide by 2. So if one side is 3 and the other 6 you know that for them to be equal you will have one side as 4½.
At stage 10 on the Hub overhaul lay the wheel over a bowl because you are bound to drop a few of the bearings.
Start with the front hub because it is easiest. To clean the bearings put them in a lid and use a brush with a thin oil like the stuff you use for general bike lubing - they will quickly come up shiny. Then dry them off. Pack the rubber cups with grease before pressing them back on.
Finally note the section where it says the wheel should have a small amount of play until you engage the quick release tightly.0
