I've just replaced the rear mech (shimano LX) on my mountain bike but it now works in reverse, as in when i press the lever to shift up a gear it shifts down and vice versa. Other than that it works fine so its just an annoyance really. Is it a different type of mech or am i missing something stupid?

sounds like you have bought a rapid rise mech.

  • yeah this means whe there is no cable in the mech it will spring upwards instead of downwards just something u will have to get used to!

They are advantageous in that it makes changing down smoother when Climbing. I prefer it.

I (mistakenly) bought a Rapid Rise last year and after a few rides really prefer it to a normal rear mech, especially off road when approaching a hill, the spring works with you not against you. Would never go back.

also, if the rear gear cable snaps, it is the easiest gear that is selected instead of the hardest one. If you get a cable snap at the bottom of a valley, then this can mean you can ride out rather than push.
