Fitting a new hub - cost?

Hi all,

With my recent issue with my front hub I'm expecting the worst that I'll need to replace the hub. Does anyone have an idea of cost? Can my lbs rebuild my front wheel with a new hub?

And I know this isn't the right part of the forum, but can anyone recommend me a decent xc front hub? It's a 6-bolt hub I need too.

Cheers

Colin

ask the LBS they should know if they can do it.
what is wrong with the old hub?

if you get a different hub you will need new spokes.
So un build (to keep rim ok) new hub new spokes and a rebuild.

    Buy a new wheel.

    Hi Nick,

    See this thread: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12592570

It may be a simple solution is needed, but I'm thinking worst case.

New spokes, and a new wheel. This could get expensive.....

A new front wheel doesn't cost the earth. Merlin will build you one for as little as £39

So, if my hub is knackered, would a new wheel be the way to go?

  • You're looking at almost £70 for an xt hub with a 719 rim and DT DB spokes in black. Your lbs will charge you £10 to dismantle the old wheel so the rim is usable, £20-£30 for the new hub £10 for the spokes and £10 to build it up. I'd buy a new wheel, it'll be much nicer than a re-built old one!

Alternatively, if you have an adjustable hub, a new set of ball-bearings and some grease may resolve the problem for a minimal sum.

I'm currently running Alex DP17's on BeOne's own 6-bolts qr hubs.

    S_J_P - that's what i'm hoping

My other half needed a new rear hub when we bought her RockShopper for the simple reason that the previous owner had got a new wheel at some point but with a standard, non disc hub as she had no plans to use discs, which is preciseley what we wanted to do. I had a look at getting it relaced and even buying a hub and having a go myself, but with a pair of WTB speediscs on Deore hubs for £70 from CRC it seemed a bit of a no-brainer just to buy a new pair. Perfectly decent wheels, seen on many a £1000 bike on test in the bikeradar mags, and if it's a big weekend's riding we throw the old front wheel in the car just in case either of us break one. Sold the old rear Mavic too!

It's great that decent gear can be had so cheaply but in many ways sad that the "throwaway society" even goes as far as something as complicated and tough as a bike wheel!
