Hi everyone,

Ive hit another predicament with the whole hardtail thing.

My LBS is selling two Scott Genius's circa 2006. One used to retail at £2,600 the other £2,200 or thereabouts, They are now selling for between 7 and 800 pounds. I have been told they are light but I havent got my hands on one yet.

I plan to do XC racing and thought a hardtail was best. I had a 2008 Giant XTC Alliance 1 in mind, the half carbon, half aluminium one but I have no idea what to go for. Is the Genius light? As light as the Giant? I feel for the relatively small amount of money Im paying that I would like as light a bike as possible so I can perhaps upgrade it later.

But are the Scott Genius that good? He also had a Cove Stiffy 2007 and a Specialized Stumpjumper 07 for a similar price but said the Genius would be best.

Totally lost!

  • The scotts are good bikes, but they're trail bikes, not really race bikes. That doesn't mean you can't race them, just that they weren't specifically meant for it.

The hardtail will (probably) be lighter, and XTCs are more race oriented bikes. If you want a more race oriented FS bike, look at something like Giant's Anthem range. 3-4" travel frames.

Where's your LBS? I like the sound of a stiffee or stumpy for 700 notes!!

Its not really my LBS but I know a guy that lives next to it. They have a Specialized stumpjumper for £900, 2008 second hand. Think the Stiffy is along the same lines.

Think I might stick to the Giant, I will try and get you a link to the shop. Its in Manchester somewhere.

Cheers for the advice... More welcome!

Basically the 2008 version of that. Think the frame is pretty similar. Any thoughts? Gimic? Heavy or worth it?
  • Not a bike I'm really familiar with, but spec looks solid enough.

I've never seen the Alliance version of an XTC before, but looks good enough to race to me, for starters.

I think you talking about the MC 10 which retailed at £ 2,600 at the time
and the MC 20 for £ 2,200 and weighed about 25 lbs for the whole bike

Both fab bikes Yes they are Trail bikes but dont let that put you off
The front fork should be 120 mm travel on them and also should have a lock out
    lever on it.

The rear shock has three adjustments
    1 fully open
    2 climbing/traction
    3 lock out.

Dont let the extra bit of travel put you off its only 20mm approx and means
you can take a harder section of the trail which would give you an edge
    over the others.
If your saying these are brand new then dont be a mug Buy it.

I had an MC20, bought new. The older model (cant speak for the new version) had and its not just me,... some slightly odd geometry going on...
I always felt perched and exposed on the bike. And it felt like you were sitting far too forwards.... Even when I changed the stem and bars.
Eventually crashed it big time which killed off any confidence in it whatsoever.... But, the only way to judge is to try for yourself.
The rear shock is brilliant, and the whole thing very tough and light- good bikes on paper, but somehow didn't add up as a whole package.

I know someone who had a very similar experience - could not get on with the bike's geometry. I'd arrange a test ride before I purchased.

Hi guys just wanted to thank everyone for the advice. I ended up getting a Scott MC50 2nd hand (2008) to save some cash.

Absolutely love it and although not an out and out racer think its a good versatile bike. At first I regretted not going for a more XC bike or hard tail but after my first trip to Glentress I was stoked!

Thanks again for all the advice. I'll go carbon one day but for now its just the TT bike!

    Cheers
