Newbie problem - gear changes

HI

I am pretty new to all this, so apologies if this is a basic question.

I have 9 speed cogs on the back and Deore front and rear derailleurs. When the bike is upside down I can happily shift through all 9 gears. When I am actually riding the bike though, I can't shift in to the smallest rear cog and there is a 'clicking' sound as if the gears are trying to change but just can't quite reach (if that makes sense).

Had a look on Park Tools and was thinking about altering some of the screws on the rear derailleur, but just seems a bit odd that all works perfectly when upside down so unilkely to be the distance the derailleur needs to travel needs altering etc (??)

Any advice would be appreciated, and if you could also assume I know nothing about bikes that would also be great!

Thanks

Tom

setting the gears upside down does not work the weight of the chain/mech cage mess it up.

adjust the lower stop or the cable tension with the bike the right way up.
