New Build - Violent Front Derailleur!

Hi Gang

I have just spent the weekend building up a Racelight TK with a 105/FSA mix (swapped from my Roubaix, which is now awaiting summer upgrades!).

Everything seems to be working fine, although when I change into the smaller chainring, the derailleur action seems quite violent - really throwing the chain onto the chain ring.

The dump lever needs a good push before it will shift too.

It's definitely rideable, the chain's not overshifting or anything. It just doesn't feel particularly smooth.

Is this normal? I'm running a compact, so I guess the chain has further to fall but it does seem quite harsh...

Any ideas?

You may have the cable too tight: do you have to push hard to get it to click when changing up to the big ring?

Might be worth backing off the barrel adjuster for the front mech so that it is under less tension when in the big ring, that way it won't snap so hard when you change down.

Set the cable so the mech is just clear of the limit stop when you are not pushing the lever. The cage should move back about 1/4mm when you release. You will be able to see the movment but only just.

    Thanks guys - all sorted.

I just needed to slacken off the cable a little bit. I was reluctant to do this as I'd previously had trouble getting the chain to shift up onto the big ring due to the cable being too slack...
