the time has come to replace my old derailleur, its worn out and ive got a bit of cash. i dont want to start a debate about which derailleur to get BUT what i dont understand is the difference between a long/medium/short cage derailleur!
i am running a normal 8 speed casset on a mrp chaindevice if that makes a difference! any ideas?

Get a super short (SS) road mech if you've a single chainring.

I run mine no bother with an 11t - 32tt cassette. even though it's meant for a road cassette.
