Putting an AHeadSet back together

A few weeks ago I took my aheadset apart to check it over and put new bearings in. I put it all back together loosely, and only today got round to fastening it up properly. From what I can see from the book I used to take it apart, all the parts push down on top of each other and it's all held in place by the stem at the top. However there's a fair bit of play in it now when I rock it back and forward and side-to-side. I took the stem off again and made sure the cups and spacers and all that stuff were firmly pushed down onto each other, but it's somehow worked loose again.

Any advice please?

Tighten it with the adjuster above the stem, before tightening the stem. If this doesn't work, you've probably put something in upside down or missed something out.

It sounds easy, aheadsets, but I've recently found it a real pain, especially with forks not originally supplied with a bike.

Problem for me has been that the fork is laying back, pushing the bearings off the races and leaving loads of play.

I solved it for the last two I've done by grabbing the leg of the fork and pushing it backwards so everything lines up properly before screwing down the compression nut to lock out the movement. Its worked every time since.

    That's done the trick - thanks 8)
