New Bike Guilt!

I feel I must publicy apologize to my amazing fiance Louise, whom I don't deserve.

My tale begins a week ago, around teatime. I had been perusing e-bay and stumbled across an almost new Giant Trance Advanced 1. I've only had my Anthem a year, and I love it, but my greed and want of new toys took hold of me like a Sith lord gripping an extra by the throat in a Star Wars movie.

I knew things were tough with all that reccesion carry on, but I thought I'd ask the woman what she thought of me getting the bike.

Once I put my teeth back in and collected my clothes off the front lawn, I thought perhaps i would just open a slush fund, and slowly save. Maybe one day, I would be able to sling my leg over a carbon framed beauty, claiming I had 'found' it in a bush. But I feared that by the time I had saved enough, it would probably be a carbon Zimmer frame.

For the next week I made Louise's life hell. I sulked, I didn't speak, I got the hump over EVERYTHING. I was a XXXXXXX XXXXXX to say the least. Even I [/i]hated me.

I tortured myself by watching the auction every day, with no bidders. But guess what. My girlfriend loves me. She phoned me just after the auction had finished when I was at work. "What are you doing on Monday Night?" she asked. "Nothing", I snapped at her, being a complete onanist yet again. "Well", she said, " I guess you better go and collect that bike you've been drooling over, because I bought it for you."

Boy, do I really feel like a selfish greedy XXXXXX now, who deserves his XXX kicked, his XXXXX cut off and shoved in his mouth etct etc. I have never been so ashamed, or had such mixed emotions about getting a new toy. I got it because I was a jerk to someone I love for days on end, :? :(

Louise, I am sorry. You probably won't read this, but I REALLY AM. I'll tell you what, you can buy that new dress we couldn't afford last week!! :D

  • Yeah, a wedding is going to cost a lot more than that bike!!! I bet at this instance she is posting on a "Wife-to-be" forum somewhere about how she has secured the wedding of her dreams.

Always good when your other half is supportive, and it sounds like yours is. There will however be payback. I've bought 2 bikes in the last 18 months, £1800 stumpy Easter 2007 with the missus blessing, in fact it was her that said you might as well buy it on finance at the beginning of the summer and ride it rather than wait for the sales having saved up  .

I then won an XT groupset in March this year which I didn't have a bike to put on. So I went out and bought a frame, bars, saddle etc and built a second bike  . Even now she's still good about my hobby, she often encourages me out to ride even when I'm not so keen and puts up with the endless spending on upgrades and bits.

    I guess she's either:
one of the best wives in the world seeing someone else considering it payback for the baby she got early this year.

I'm banking on a lot of point 1 and a bit of point 3, I must admit I sometimes take my right to go out and ride a bit too much for granted  .
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

  • This dress she wanted.. For what she did for you, I'd say you aught to buy her 2 or 3 dresses... And anything else she wants

Bloody hell, as nice as it'd be.. I'm sure I couldn't cope with someone doing that for me, purely for the fact I would die, right there and then at the words "I brought it for you"

p.s, I reckon that little story deserves a place in the mag, simply because it's great! (and different)

Cook her a bit of top nosh and have some quality bubbly. She deserves it.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.
  • Wonderful, I also have one of the good wives, recently saw a new s-works stumpjumper fsr with a good discount and 0% finance, so i thought i would ask if i could get one. I really expected her to say no, but she just said "yes, i don't see why not". i nearly collapsed. So i think the moral is- find a good woman, and don't be afraid to ask(the worst that could happen is she says no).

My wife never complains about me spending...em....a lot...on my hobby, when she wants something for herself(which is not often!) or for the house or kids then I have no problem with her buying whatever...as long as we can afford it, same goes with me.

Out side of my family, mtb is my only real interest, work is a necessary inconvenience, something that I have to do.

Believe me life is very, very short, I’ve spent most of my life in the Armed Forces and seen terrible things and loss of life like you wouldn’t believe…money may mean a lot to some people, but to me it means ****all, enjoy life anyway you can.

Seriously though. I think you have got all us blokes thinking a bit..... I'm away quite a bit cos of work, then when it comes to weekends i sod off to play golf on a saturday (another expensive hobby), and then go out on my bike on Sunday morning. All while she's being given the run-around by our two kids

Best call at the Esso station on the way home

    Pictures required.

Bike, not missus - unless she's a hottie.

And what price did she get it for?

Well, I think she's hot. Too hot for me, really. I'm a bit ugly. Should I start a hot or not poll until I get pics of the new bike?

3, Makes me realise that my Wife doesn't give a sh!t about me :(
40 year old pussy who "still" hates the thought of falling off!!
  • If she sees this pic, she will;

1- Kill me for posting it

2- Complain that her backside looks huge

How could she possible complain that her ar*e looks big?
It's not on show in that pic.

Post another one, and *we'll* be the judge!!

I'm going to guess that there's a perspective thing going on there, and that she doesn't really need to duck to walk through that door.

And the Trance looks good too. ;)

Absolute steal at that price, well done.
  • I learned TWO things this week;

Never be horrible to someone who loves you.

NEVER post pictures of someone who loves you on T'internet.

Hope she's bought you some pedals too :)
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • great stuff:)

Popped into our LBS a few weeks ago to enquire about frames when out on a walk with the family.
The shop owner and my wife ganged up on me and made me buy a Madone 6.5. Really quite astounded to hear her say 'Whenever you have any money it goes on the house or the kids. About time you spent some on yourself'.

    ace :)
