Just getting into road cycling as a means to get fit, using lejog in 09 as a goal. Building a bike so I get to know it. Have no idea what level of shimano I should go in at.
I know that you get what you pay for, but is it worth me spending x to get sora or double x to get 105. would I notice the difference? I see that there are £600 bikes that use sora, they can't be that bad. Or is the money better spent on either tiagra or even 105?

vague Q I know but just humour me!
Thanks

  • Personally, I would think that 105 would be more suitable. Although it is more expensive, I think it is worth it for the lighter weight, and greater durability. This second improvement on the cheaper groupsets I would imagine will be particularly important if you're intending to train and complete a lejog ride.

Shop around for the best prices online to get more for your money. Merlin Cycles are always good value for Shimano Groupsets, they are currently doing 105 for about £250.

I reckon 105 represents the best choice in terms of performance per pound spent, as it were. If you had to look at Tiagra instead, I don't think you'd be disappointed - but if your budget can stretch to the 105 groupset, I'd recommend it.

I would go for the highest spec you can afford as long as it's relative to the spec of your frame. This will save you an extra cost later on by avoiding having to upgrade when you realise that you would appreciate the better kit.

+1 for the 105 kit, I think you would notice a fairly marked improvement over Sora and a bit over Tiagra. again Merlin is a good and usually cheap place to order from.

I would go for the 105. I upgraded to 105 from Sora mainly because of the STI levers. The Sora just have the little thumb lever for changing up. No matter how I adjusted the bars etc I could never reach the lever to change up when on the drops ( important when descending). Also 105 seem to last longer.
