Fork upgrade...is it worth it?

Hi Guys,

I have a 10 week old Trek Fuel 5.5 with a Tora 130mm 302 fork on it. The fork has been sent back to Fisher outdoor as there is a problem with it. If they offer to replace it, rather than fix it, should i look to asking for an upgrade to a slightly better model?

Reading lots of reviews always gives the impression that is OK, but nothing more than that. I don't ride fast or hard, so is it worth it? If so, what would you suggest in the RS range? Should i stick with 130mm travel or go for less? I have 5 inches of bounce at the back end.

Cheers,

Steve

    Hello steve, Hows things ?

Defo get a new fork....and I'll buy the tora off you :D

Tbh, I've got a fair idea of how you ride so I think that an upgrade won't be worth it.

I'm OK ta, but could be better! How's your foot?

Your right about my riding, but always looking for a reason to upgrade.

I,m hoping i can do a deal with Fisher, but if not i might sell it and look on the net for a replacement. How much is it worth?

I think you'll be lucky to get an upgrade unless you're prepared to pay the extra. Given that it sounds like a warranty job, Fisher are only required to replace it like-for-like. As they are only the distributor for Rock Shox, if you ask them for an upgrade they'd be well within their rights to refuse.

Probably the best thing would be to get a like-for-like replacement then get them upgraded at your LBS and stick your Toras on FleaBay.

    Good advice from Dave there.

If doing that, maybe see if LBS has a 2008 Revelation U-turn you could get for a good price. Would be great on your bike.

I didn't think they would upgrade for free, but give me the going rate for the tora to put towards the better model, rather than trying to sell them myself.

They will probably only change a part rather than the whole fork anyway.

Yep, they will just change the part.

The 302 is worth about 70 quid. Which is a pity, as they are very similar to recons and revs. Don't expect a huge change in performance, though the motion control dampers are better.
