Ok I've just put on a new chain, new cables but still can't get the bloody gears to set up right. Until a few moments ago that is as I just noticed that one of the teeth on the cassette is bent but I'm not 100% sure that there is supposed to be a slight bent one to aid shifting??? Thing is though, no matter what I do to try and adjust the H L screws this bend is always catching the chain. Any ideas?

The cassette teeth are usually shaped but not bent, and I can't imagine that it would be easy to bend one without hitting it with heavy tools on a workbench - can you post a photo?

Bear in mind that if the cassette is worn, it will have worn to fit the old chain, fitting a new chain will then result in poor meshing, and its time for a new cassette. Usual advice is to change the chain before it is too worn, then one cassette should last for three chain changes.

The H+L screws are unlikely to do anything to stop a bent tooth catching a chain, unless you adjust them such that the chain cannot shift onto the ring with the bent tooth.

How old is the cassette? They're not supposed to have bent teeth. The closest you get to an intentional bent tooth is an occasional blunt tooth on some chainrings.

sorry to state the obvious, it worked like this before?
is the chain compatible? the correct speed etc..

and finally it the tooth could be damaged but i would have thought it would have shown up with the old chain.

  • Yep I think it's screwed!!! To be honest the chain was way past it's sell by date so I have to hold my hand's up there

A think a new cassette is in order!!! This cassette is from the bike when bought so it's about 19 months old.Don't you just love the credit crisis! More spending!!!

Is there much difference to a ultegra cassette than a dura-ace?

alfablue, I would post a pic but todays is the day I left my camera in work for the first time in my life and now I need it, sod's law!

Difference, well I don't think there would be a huge difference apart from price, average Ultegra weight 235g, Dura Ace 173g, I saved money and got a 105, 250g. (Actually I have a 105 cassette for sale here).

Don't worry about the photo, I was just intrigued to see the bent tooth!
