    when you want to.

    IE when climbing.

i use the lock out on the ups, just wondered if you should use different fork length for various terrains, mine are always fully out.

lock out on flats. reduced travel on climbs.

Or steeper head angle for quicker tight handling. Given your frame can 'handle' it (ie a reasonable BB height). Less can be a whole lot more.
  • Hmm quick question, I have 85-130mm Recon's on my bike and on an average ride I come within 20mm of maxing them out, they dont feel overly spongy and I cant push them down much (they're air forks) so if I was ro reduce them for whatever reason wouldn't I end up damaging them?

I wind down and lock out my recons (coil) only on climbs/tarmac and fireroads. wind up to 115 for most singletrack, open fully for longer, more technical downhills (stuff with bumpy bit more than 6 inches high).

With the fork wound down technical climbs are much easier as the front doesn't lift and bounce so easy.

At 100-115mm for singletrack the fork has enough travel to cope with the ground but does not slow the handling too much. Doing singletrack fully open feels like steering a barge.

Fine tuning the steering response is what adjustable travel is all about in my book. Bar width, stem length, head angle and fork travel all combine to form a steering characteristic. Easiest way to make if feel "neutral" is to experiment with fork travel.
