Stronglight chainring causing problems on Ultegra Chainset
Hi everyone, I've recently fitted a 50T Stronglight Zircal chainring to my Ultegra Hollowtech 2 chainset, to replace the 53T Shimano ring. This will give me a more useable set of ratios for winter plodding.
The problem is that the Shimano ring curves outwards, whereas the Stronglight does not. The result is that when I'm in the inner ring and the 3rd smallest sprocket, the chain catches on the pickup points on the inside of the Stronglight outer ring. If I use the 2nd smallest sprocket, the pickup points try to shift the chain onto the outer ring.
I was thinking about using some very thin spacers to move the outer ring further out, but I'm worried that this will just cause the chain to drop between the chainrings. Has anyone else had this problem - how did you solve it?

back in the 80s chainrings only varied in bolt circles and it was no big deal changing brands. But now with ramps and pins on each ring to make changing gears easier we have maide it more difficult to change the brands of used in our spare parts.
Honestly I think the only real solution you have is to replace both the inner and outer rings at the same time to ensure teh pinning and ramps are located so they work togather. It may be possible to space the outer ring but then it will not have teh full support of the spider which may increase flexing.
Have you tried rotating the ring to see if that reduces the issues?0 -
Thanks!! I didn't think about replacing the inner ring too, that's a good idea.0
