Can anyone recommend any long sleeve base layers?
Morning commutes are starting to get chilly now and I determined to keep on going but need to keep warm!
At the moment I am just wearing some Helly Hansen ones I have had for a couple of years but to be honest I am not that impressed.

If you are commuting try a merino wool type as they don't make you stink.

Icebreaker or the like have been a few posts about them on here.

I've got a couple of Pearl Izumi ones that I've had a few years now, with the anti-smell silver oxide thread (from before merino went big) which I really can't fault (aside from the fact that I'm a bit bigger now than I was when I bought them).

nothing beats Under Armour - as a lacrosse team we've worn it for a number of years and now I wear it when its a bit chilly, Its compression clothing and wicks away sweat, perfect for on a bike, you can get direct from the states on their website but JJB and Barrington sports also do a smaller range of black, white long sleave in some stores

    See http://www.underarmour.co.uk/shop

You can search for your nearest retailer.

No idea whats its like though but have used a Nike base layer over the summer and its also pretty good in the autumn too.
  • I've just started using a specialized Base Layer. Its tight fitting, warm, and cheap!

The best ones I have by far are the ones from sports and soccer or the other sports stores on these shopping outlets.
I got several Nike and Umbro ones for between £10 and £14 each, I have no sleeve, short and long sleeve for various uses and they are great to keep warm and excellent wicking.
Easily as good if not better than more expensive ones.
  • I have a couple of long sleeve Helly Hansen ones like this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Helly_Hansen_Stripe_Crew_L~S_Base_Layer/5360012445/ very good when the temp drops, for more autumnal riding I also have a couple of these http://www.prendas.co.uk/details.asp?typ=typ&fkid=22&ID=367 but in white.

I have a couple of Helly Hasen's for when it's not too cold, and then I have a Howies NBL Light LS Merino Wool base layer for when it's really cold. I find with that and my Altura Reflex windrpoof I'm fine from about 5 to -5.

For commuting, nothing beats merino wool baselayers - synthetic ones are usually too smelly for re-use. Fine for sports when you are taking them off and washing immediately when you stop, but for commuting I assume you'll want to wear it to and from (and if in a chilly office, under your office clothes). They may seem expensive but once you get a good one you'll wonder how you lived without them (and since they don't need much washing you really only need the one anyway).

There was a tread a few days back discussing various ones, but Howies, Rapha and Icebreaker make great premium quality (and price) ones, while Endura, NZO and Groundeffect have better value ones.

i have a merino wool baselayer. its amazing, they are expensive but worth it. They really don't smell, you could carry on wearing it all day in the office after a hard commute and no one would be any the wiser to your sweaty commute.

For winter there's absolutely nothing that will beat a 100% merino base layer. I wear various other man-made base layers in summer and most are pretty good but in winter merino is the only choice...
