Crazy Idea?

I have an old Marin Rift Zone (98) frame in my shed which I'm thinking of giving a modern twist with some nice new components. Couple of thoughts:
1. Am I crazy investing money in such an old bike when my other bikes will probably be a better ride? The thing is that I loved this bike all them years ago and i never really wanted to see it die. Should I just accept it and skip it?
2. If I wanted to replace the rear shock with a nice new air shock, instead of that horrible unintelligent coil that's currently on it, is there anything that will fit that's new?

personally, i would kep the old bike if you love it, fix it up with retro bits if they need rplacing and kep it as a hobby bike or something to ride for a treat everyso often.
then buy a nice shiny new bike second hand off ebay0 -
Marins always have had good frames - and great bearings.0
