Which bike?

I'm looking for a good xc hardtail around the £1000 - £1200 mark. I'm not quite sure what to go for? I'm going to be using it for commuting (2 mile round trip) every day and for some light cross country and trails. I've wanted a stumpjumper for years but never got round to it. Is this the way forward or can anyone give me some more ideas? I've been looking at marin bikes and a few american makes but i'm lost now!

    any preferance for steel or aluminium?

    I'm a bit new to this as you can probably tell. I'm not sure really. I'm about to blow a grand on a bike and I'm getting more and more confused. I know what I want to do with it and I want to get a really good bike with good components so I won't have to upgrade anything or be looking for a replacement in a few months. I can get a decent deal on an 08 model which means i get better spec for the price but I'm getting more lost.
