Rear Derailleur help please!

Hi guys,

Basicallyi took my commuter bike apart to respray it and i can't remember how the rear Derailleur goes back together. I took it off the frame before the spray.

The Derailleur is a Shimano SIS, and is attached via a long bolt though the frame, the bolt somehow acts as a hindge and has a C clip on the end to hold the Derailleur onto it. My main problem is the spring inbetween these two compants that i assume srings the Derailleur away from the gears.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

the bolt appears to be called the hanger bolt

i guess you have dismantled the mech its self?

Pics would be good I gotta say. BUT, without cable attached (and tensioned, make sure rear shifter in highest gear) there is no spring, the only spring you will have is if you push the derailleur towards the cassette. I'm assuming that may be your problem.

well, theres a spring that i think act against the B screw, just need to know how this goes

read sheldon browns pages on mech.
he has info on rebuilding rear mechs but not the SIS.

and general rule is dont take then to bits in the first place and thing suffer from Fridge suck.

that is indeed the spring, i just cant remember how it goes in or which was it is supposed to tension the rear mech :P

thanks guys, will have to read the whole thing tommorow, just wondering if anyone knew off the top of their head so i could have a quick poke around :P

yes but Park do it better.

also you have not said what exact mech it is. (a lot say SIS in them).

will take a look tommorow, all i can see is Shimano SIS, no model number/name
