Rear Derailleur help please!

Hi guys,
Basicallyi took my commuter bike apart to respray it and i can't remember how the rear Derailleur goes back together. I took it off the frame before the spray.
The Derailleur is a Shimano SIS, and is attached via a long bolt though the frame, the bolt somehow acts as a hindge and has a C clip on the end to hold the Derailleur onto it. My main problem is the spring inbetween these two compants that i assume srings the Derailleur away from the gears.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Drummer Ian

i guess you have dismantled the mech its self?
Got pics?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Pics would be good I gotta say. BUT, without cable attached (and tensioned, make sure rear shifter in highest gear) there is no spring, the only spring you will have is if you push the derailleur towards the cassette. I'm assuming that may be your problem.0
