Bar Tape

Just bought some new bar tape, Deda. It comes with the usual plugs and black tape to secure the other ends of the tape, but there's also two strips of approx' 3 inches long of the actual bar tape. Can anyone tell me the purpose of these?

You wrap them under the levers to avoid an unsightly gap in the taping.
