hub/rear wheel problem

hey all
got a giant xtc 1 which i have had for about 4 months now and i noticed that the rear wheel has a wobble and clunking noise issue.
When the wheel is on the bike i can phyiscally move it laterally and it has a few mm of play either side of centre. Think it could be the hub.
If someone can tell me other wise or give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated. I am basically wanting to know if its a problem that can be fixed or is it a case of buying a new hub

the cones of the bearings will have come lose. and you may or may not have lost a ball or two.
How toos on ParkTools webby Link below."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I'd get it checked at the shop where you bought it from. Has it had it's first service?
If it has has this play for a while then you may well have damaged the races in the hub, which is new hub time i'm afraid.0
