This will probably be as divisive as the compact vs. triple debate but what are the people opinion o here about Campag's new 11 Speed series??

What do you think the pro's and con's would be?

To be fair they don't cost that much more than the current stuff (the exception being SR)

  • There's a video 'review' somewhere out there on the net with a Campag spokesman talking about the '09 groups. The interviewer asks why they've gone to 11 and what the advantages are. The answer is basically: 'It'll shift a bit better and er... well, some pros said they wanted an 18 ...'.

I'm buying 09 record, but mainly for the improved ceramic bearings (and because I saved up enough, so why not?).
  • Pros: The extra ratio which provides maybe 1% more efficiency in pedaling (only really useful to pros), telling all your friends at the start of a club ride...
Cons: The thinner chain will snap easier, harder to get hold of parts, no way of mixing groupsets (Shimano/SRAM, etc), the list goes on.

I honestly don't see the reason for it... :?

FCN 3 or 4 on road depending on clothing
FCN 8 off road because I'm too old to go racing around.

They do when you look at the manual and see the number of parts that are different between '09 Centaur and '09 Record. ;)
  • Pros: I cant think of one. All it will do is close a two tooth gap to a one tooth, but the two tooth gaps are already small <10%

Cons: Faster wear, narrower chain presumably more likely to break. I'm guessing Millar would have preferred one less sprocket but a chain that didnt break at the Giro this year.
