Hi, I would like to buy a spoke tensiometer to check my newly build wheels.
I can see that Park Tolls one sells for about £59 but looks expensive, in the States sells be about $59 i.e. half price.
Can you recommend any affordable tensionmeter?

  • Well CRC do the Park one for £50...

I've got one. It IS a precision, calibrated, instrument - I was quite pleasantly surprised by the quality, and it is about 1/4 the price of the DT Swiss one...

If you want cheaper, pinging the spokes in turn and listening for tone differences works reasonably well.
  • How do you know what note to listen for without a tensiometer?
    100% ME!
Do you think I would be this bad on drugs?
  • Yeah, your index finger works pretty well and is hard to beat for the price....
  • I recently built my first set of wheels and the Park Tools TM-1 tension meter made the job a lot easier. Yes, it costs a fair bit but so does a decent hub, rim, etc. so I figured it was a worthwhile investment.

If you buy one and decide you don't want/need it after your wheel build you could always stick it on ebay (I'm sure it would have a reasonably high 2nd hand value).

Just had a quick look on ebay and there are several TM-1 listed, they are all supplied from the USA so you'd have to take your chances with import duty but you might get one slightly cheaper than UK prices.
