Edge 305

Spent the weekend playing with my new Edge 305 - man that's a fun peice of equipment! All the data I'll ever need (for now, anyway, until I get like, rilly rilly obsessive and move onto power meters...) and it tracks where I've been. Viewing a ride in Training Cenre via 360* in Google Earth is esp sweet.
But functionally:
1. It take at least 5mins to find satelites. Is this normal, or is Embra just a GPS black hole? I had huge problems using Nokia Sportstracker too. Feel a bit stupid just sitting on my bike outside the house for 5 mins while the edge gets a fix.
2. What programs do you guys prefer for plotting routes/courses etc?
Marengo? BikeRouteToaster? Mapmyride etc?

I've been getting really long fix times lately as well and I feel your pain on the "looking like a tit outside your house for five minutes" scenario. I've taken to putting it out on the windowsill while I haul myself into the lycra and fill up the water bottles.
For route websites, I quite like GPSies but everyone else seems to prefer the ones you mention, particularly BikeRouteToaster.0 -
I am adding my name to the list of those who stand outside on the pavement looking like lemons while the Garmin tries to find the satellites!
I love my Edge 705 though - even if the cadence sensor seems to have packed in and the unit kept crashing. Thankfully it has stopped doing the latter now after a firmware update!0 -

It wouldn't be so bad if I was one of those SS poseurs with their trendy fixed gear threads and courier bags, but I live near a playpark and it looks a bit dodgy loitering around the swings in lycra...________________________________

It's worse on the way home for me. My work has an underground bike park so I can't even turn the 305 on until I'm already riding the bike.
So I either have to stop once I come out above ground and wait for five minutes or let it get a fix while I ride, which takes even longer and means I never time my ride from exactly the same spot twice.

Mine works fine - tends to take about 30-45 seconds to get a fix, even if I'm in the 'canyon' between my house and next door. Perhaps you could try holding it up in the air - I doubt it would make you look any more dodgy than you already do
