Brake/Gear Cables & Brake Pads advice

Does anyone have any advice on different types of cables to replace my current shimano ones? Do I just stick with the same ones or are there some better ones out there?

Same question for pads really, I have Ksyrium equipe wheels so no fancy carbon unfortunately. I've been using normal shimano pads but just don't seem to last very long.
