For some odd reason my rear break has stopped working. the pistons just don't move enough to grip the disc.

the breaks are hayes el camino.

Last time I clean my bike :D

any ideas ?

    what happens to the lever?

what did you clean the bike with?

what did you spray on the bike?

  • lever moves as far as it can.

I used water to clean it. I took the wheels off to clean them. But I kicked the leaver when the bike was upside down with my foot. then I noticed the the pistons had moved close. i just pushed them back.

I was thinking maybe some air has got into the caliper?

so the lever goes to the bar? and repeated pumping of the lever does nothing?

  • that sounds about right. usualy I pump it till grabs the disc , that does not happen this time. there move out a little then dont move any more closer.
  • i dont think its broke, its just not working. was working before as I was on it just before.

air in the system. needs a bleed.

  • thanks dude, thats what I thought. now shall i try it self? last time I did it on my old avids it ended up been a total disaster. what do you think happens when you bleed the wrong leaver with the wrong caliper? push enough and somthing shoots out with all the fluid!!

if you are going to try it buy the Hayes bleed kit.

    it makes it easier.

  • Got a friend of mine to have a look. he says there looks to be an issue with the leaver as it wont bleed from the leaver. The other leaver bleeds fine.

I've never seen a Hayes el camino, but generally speaking, you tend to bleed air from the caliper and top up with oil at the lever. You then squeeze the lever to force oil towards the caliper with the bleed valve open to allow the air (& a bit of fluid) to escape, repeating the process until no more air bubbles. Get on the Hayes website if you don't have the manual or pay a man to do it for you - about a tenner. By the way, it's "brake" and "lever".
  • sorry about the typos my spelling is not the best. You see you can not push any fluid down or up. If you attach something to lever and push fluid from the bottom up nothing happens. you would expect it to push the fluid to the lever but it does not. and if you try from the lever down, still nothing happens. TBH I think i have a faulty lever and I will try and get it replaced. As the front bleeds fine..

Sounds like your best bet - you evidently know how to bleed it so get onto whoever supplied it and see if they can sort a replacement!
