Hello All

Three of us are planning a South Down 2 Dayer on October 4th and 5th but we've just realised rail maintenance on the Winchester to London line means we might not be able to get back - the bus replacement won't take bikes. Given that we'll be physically and mentally broken by the time we roll into Winchester, has anyone got any ideas?

start at the far away point, working towards home.

    we aim to please!

it all came from the time I literally walked into the dalai lama in Edinburgh (i was fiddling with my mp34 player or something)...

He smiled and said 'In life.....you should not only remember where you have been, but also look where you are going!'

Taxi? when we did the SDW they had the London to brighton on so couldnt get the train home. 3 of the guys ordered a big people carrier taxi, took the bikes apart and went to the nearest station that would take them.

B&B extra night? could enjoy a couple of beers that evening then?
  • May have a rail solution - Eastbourne to St. Leonard's and then on to Waterloo. I like the extra night/extra beer option but unfortunately we're back to the coal face on Monday morning  . If the train is out I think we'll have to cab it, we'll definitely be all zened out by Sunday afternoon  .
  • I think we might have been lucky with the taxi, wasn't Nick on the phone for hours sorting that out? Although i have seen a lot of Citroen Dispatch taxi's around latetly. How about doing it the other way round?

A cab from Eastbourne to Hastings cost us a ridiculously cheap £25 which between 3 was next to nothing. He was the second guy i called and had a big car as he does a lot of airport runs. You're in luck, i still have his number in my phone so let me know if you want it and I'll PM it to you. Might be worth checking the nearest station that's not affected by rail works and getting a cab there.

National express would be a risk as they only take large items 'if there is space' - i.e. if you get a nice driver.
  • Or maybe it was piss easy :) Hope you get it sorted, have a good ride.
  • Cheers all, we're all set - just need the weather to behave now...

  • Andy - we're doing Eastbourne to Winchester (not taking a direct train back to avoid the rail replacement).
Russalf - if the weather's anything like that I'll be sitting in the flat watching Countryfile. Way too brutal! Was that a 2 dayer you did?

Yeah it was a 2 dayer. Well a 1 and a bit dayer really as we had to cut it short in those condtions. We had another crack at it later in the year and found it very doable in 2 days. By no means an easy ride but great fun!!
