Rear wheel not centred - what's the cause?

Hi. I've just replaced the rear wheel on my bike, and upon tightening the skewer after fitting the new wheel I noticed the seatstays being pulled together. I can't get the wheel pulled up tight, and when I get it fairly tight, the tyre rubs on the left seatstay.
I've noticed the hub does not have a rubber cover like the old one. It's a Deore hub. Any suggestions, or servicing advice?
Thanks in advance.

    what bike?

and do you have a picture of the hub?

  • It's an old m-trax frame.
I don't think it's the bike cos the wheel I just took off was dead centre.
The new wheel is true, so I'm presuming the new hub has washers/nuts missing on non drive side as axle is long on this side

O.K. Thanks Nicklouse. The pdf link sorted out the hub. The doughnut I bought the wheel from had the cones on the wrong sides and the spacers all mixed up.
Got the wheel centred, went for a ride, got home and the hub's developed play.
Went on the Park Tool website, followed the instructions re. hub overhaul and adjustment.
Went for another ride, got home and it's got about 1mm of side to side play again (at the rim).
The spokes are tight, the rimm runs true.
    WTF have I missed?
  • Forgot to say. THANKYOU for your help. I do appreciate it.

it sounds like you are just not quite managing to nip the lock nuts up right so the cones are coming lose.

  • Cheers mate. I've tried adjusting it about twenty times. Had to give up in the end as SWMBO hollered for help with our 7 month old son.
    Thanks.
Hope to get it sorted tomorrow as I start 'commuting' to work on Monday (12.5 miles each way) and I've signed up for the Viking Challenge in October.
  • if your getting it right and play develops after youve ridden then either use some thread lock on the lock nuts or a drop of sperglue if you havent any thread lock, should stop them coming loose accidentally again!
